I live in a horseshoe off a residential road that contains 5 homes. I want to build an advanced notification system. I'm thinking either an IR laser or just a regular IR. It would extend from one side of my property line to the other. This would cover cars as well as human traffic. I want to wire it to a strobe light that would be placed in the living/TV room and the master bedroom. I also want a switch for the master bedroom to arm a 120db siren to alert us if we are sleeping.

Can anyone give me any advice?

There are outdoor PIR's and IR beams that you could use for this - problem's going to be that larger animals (Deer) will trip these. All this stuff will require some low voltage wires and the most straightforward way to deal with this would be to wire everything into a simple 6 or 8 zone alarm panel.Panel will give you 12V DV - battery back up and a keypad(s). Personally - a 120dB siren in the bedroom would get old REALLY fast.
Do you have bushes/trees or other terrain in the way ? I would consider mounting motion detectors on your home/garage pointing out . Small animal immune outdoor detectors are not cheap.

A motion-detector floodlight is one thing, but ... what's that proverb? The early bird sets off the 120 decibel siren?

I live in a city so animals larger than squirrels aren't an issue. I'd mount the beam approx 2.5' from the ground. The way my house is situated, you cannot accidentally wander to my driveway.

If you don't have a long driveway, you might be able to get by with a wireless motion detector. Home Depot sells one that has a receiver that plugs into an outlet and has an audible alarm (not 120db) and an outlet where you can plug a lamp in so that it turns on when the detector is activated. You have the option of using both, or either.

Less than $50 and you you can mount the detector so that it is not obvious

I live out in the country and have a long driveway. I have used this system (you can add any number of receivers) for the past 7 years. The problem for me is that the deer and foxes set it off too. ;) Used in conjunction with motion activated floods, you can see what set it off.

Nothing like waking up to a possible intrusion issue deaf and blind. That'll show em when you're stumbling around with hands clamped over your ears running into walls and furniture.

Thank you! I really hadn't thought about this. Maybe I should mount the alarm outside. As far as bedside wakeup, would a computer set to play some Slayer work?

I'd rather have South Of Heaven :D

Maybe the tune from Deliverence instead? :D

No. I think Slayer would do the job nicely. If I heard Slayer kick on I would sh*t my pants. The Deliverance theme would make me think "damn that dude can pick".

Seriously though, a simple motion set-up would work fine. Something from Home Depot or Lowe's would do the trick. Unless you want to get into cameras. My neighbor installs camera system into various businesses and uses extra components in his home. Pretty neat really but the set-up includes a dvr and feeds into the main living room tv and also his bedroom tv. This would be the way to go if you can afford it or have "extra" equipment.

Good luck CM. .50 cal. motion activated turrets would also work. Just a thought.

I'd hate to be your neighbor when someone turns around in your driveway in the middle of the night. nothing like bogusly overdoing it....

My co-worker lives in the country with a long drive. He has an app for his iphone that tells him when someone is coming up his drive.

Yea, maybe, but if you heard deliverence you damn sure wouldn't roll over

The HD package works great for what it is - been using it for about 3 years and meet everyone at the door before they get there. Actually my dogs have learned what that alarm means too and go ape$h#% WHEN IT'S TRIGGERED.
