So last night I am watching this western called seraphim falls. At one point in the movie Piers Brosnan gets shot in the arm while running from some guys trying to kill him.

He gets away starts a fire, dumps some whiskey on the wound and then takes this huge ass bowie knife that is a 1/4" thick or so and starts to try and fish out the bullet while he bites some leather.

The whole time I am watching this I am not thinking "wow! You had to be a tough SOB to live that lifestyle back then."

Nope. All I could think was " HEY that is the wrong knife!!! Dont you have something smaller? I am not sure that blade is a slicer."

This forum has twisted my views on things...lol

I saw that movie, may be that Bond dude's best movie. From what I recall; the knife is in a lot of scenes, almost another character haha! I wish more Cormack McCarthy books would be adapted into films, the stuff the characters do with burning hot pieces of steel would make for interesting viewing.

Knife is a Muela Magnum 26. He did have a smaller knife later in the film.

It shows ya that if ya had to have one knife for survival a bowie makes a great weapon / tool

One of the best Western films , ever.

There's also a seen where he sticks the knife in fire to cauterize a wound , I believe.

Men back then were obviously not familiar with the terms "Safe Queen" , or "Spa Treatment"... ;)

When it comes to knives I still don't know what "spa treatment" means. That's just a bunch of wussy stuff. Spa? Real men don't use spas. You want a manicure and a pedicure with that spa, followed by exfoliation? How manly is that? It's not!

A knife sent in for spa treatment? What happens to it? Does it get all shiny again or something? Might as well be safe queen.

Back to the topic. I loved that movie. There are few great westerns these days. Anyone that comes out that's decent is a treat.

Saw this movie for the first time recently, on cable. If there were such an Oscar category as 'most thorough use of a knife', I'd have to nominate this movie.

To wit:

Uses tip of bowie to punch primer on cartridge (after using same said knife to pry the slug out of the cartridge), to help start a fire.

Uses bowie to dig bullet out of own arm.

Uses same bowie, heated in fire, to cauterize bullet wound.

Uses bowie to set trap (trimming branches, etc.).

Uses bowie to 'dispatch' hired gun trying to chase him, by dropping the knife from tree-top perch, directly into & through hired gun's own forehead.

Uses bowie to euthanize/gut his own horse (the horse having collapsed from thirst in the desert), then crawls inside the body cavity to 'hide' in anticipation of ambushing the man who's chasing him.

Probably more stuff I can't remember, at the moment.

He also threw the knife at the young outlaws that had just robbed the bank.

One of my favorite movies because the knife plays such a prominent role, what's not to love. You really do get a sense of how important a knife can be in survival.
He must have really ruined the heat treat cauterizing that wound though:D

The one thing that kept bugging me, was the blade on that big bowie always looked a bit too 'shiny', for all it'd been put through. Never took any patina at all (even after all the blood, water, snow, FIRE, etc.). Turns out the Muela Magnum 26 Bowie was made with a stainless blade (Drats!). Didn't fit the period of the movie.

Yes, us knife nuts tend to look at these things a little too critically, me thinks.

Quite right. Here are a couple of pics of the Seraphim Falls Bowie made by my friend Roger Smith of Bloodworth knives.

Big thick blade, nice patina and check out the Bear on the Crown. Much more authentic.

Why does this knife cost almost $500?? Is it a full custom knife from Muela, or are they trying to make money off of the movie?

Forgive mw for re-starting this thread, but would a big knife like that really be able to do all those things for real? It's a much cheaper knife to buy direct from Spain, around 230 Euro that's $258 dollars plus tax and shipping guys? Worth it you reckon?
