SERE 2000--Initial Impressions

I've had the new incarnation of the S2K (black blade and black clip) for about a week and my impressions are very positive so far.

I had heard of liner lock problems, but mine is locked up as tight as a drum. I'm not a believer of "spine whacking", but I did hold the knife (carefully) in my right hand and took numerous "hits" up against my left palm with no problems.

The handle is built like a tank. A stop pin plus 3 other spacer pins plus a very beefy SS spacer at the butt. There is no way this handle is going to surrender to lateral stress or torque.

The thumb studs (another frequent complaint) were well finished and smooth and have been quite comfortable.

My local B&M dealer had indicated that early production runs had some liner lock issues, but recent copies have had no problems at all.

The VG10 blade came razor sharp and the grind lines were perfectly symetrical so resharpening should be a snap.

It looks like any initial probs. have been worked out and this knife appears to be a real winner. A little "beefy", but rugged, solid and
similar in feel and weight to the LCC.

I'll give more detailed comments in a couple of weeks after I've had the chance to put it to some serious use in the "country" at my brother's Connecticut country house.

It's a slick blade, no doubt.
I rotate it as my EDC along with my 710HSSR.
You will be very happy with it.

I too, got a good one. Mine also locks up perfectly and has zero wobble or blade play. Near perfect grinds. The only problem I am having is, the thumbstud keeps catching on my pocket as I pull the knife out, partially opening the blade. So far, no accidents, but its starting to annoy me.

I got mine a week ago and agree with everything said above (except that my thumbstuds don't catch on my pocket; they appear to be the new, smoother design even though I don't have the black blade).

One thing I can add is that because the SERE rides so deep in the pocket, it's a bit slow to deploy. With this deep-pocket carry, if you're out in the bush there's much less chance that a branch or other object will rip the knife out of your pocket. But for those interested in tactical use, getting it out of your pocket, shifting the knife in your hand to reposition it, then opening it (very smooth) takes a lot of time.

Compared to my Spyderco Wegner, the Wegner rides high and is much more obvious. But it's also much faster to deploy. That said, the SERE is a beautiful knife and I'm really glad I got it.
