Went to a gun and knife show this weekend and picked up an AL MAR SERE 2000. This knife is great!!! It's all I've looked for in a knife. I waited a while after hearing all the threads on lock problems but this one locks up rock solid. It has already replaced my Spyderco Military and my Emerson SOCFK that I just got 3 weeks ago. I recommend this knife for those looking for a solid hard use knife, and I've only had it for about 24 hours! One word of caution....this knife is SHARP as H*LL. I have 2 band aids on and counting already.

I plan on getting a second one already and I never buy 2 of the same knife.

NIB,
I couldn't agree with you more!!!!

The SERE 2000 is damn near, IMHO at least, the perfect "tactical/utility knife" that has ever been offered.
*Note-I said, "Damn near". After all, no knife is perfect.

It is an awesome knife, for sure. I got mine about a month and a half ago. The lockup is better than anything I've felt. I've spine wacked the heck out of it. Not a budge. I think the reports of bad locks were grossly exaggerated, maybe because the knife was hyped a lot when it came out. This knife is a rugged brute, but it also screams to be dressed up, so I will probably have mine customized with either stag or burl scales, and some file work.

For those of you who haven't bought one yet, this is one of a very few number of production knives that I would not hesitate to recommend to anyone. Let me thank those that originally recommended the SERE to me. It is now my EDC, and I like it and trust it.

NIB,
Do a search on this forum and on the reveiw forums, if you haven't already, and you will find a wealth of info. I am of the opinion, and have been saying this since last year!, that were it not for so many new knives and new locking systems introduced last year the SERE would have gotten more press. As it is, it turned out to be a real sleeper. I currently have two, and like you rarely buy two of the same. The knife is that good. Fit and finish are tops, and everything about this knife speaks "first class"!

NIB, Raptor, Jeff, Perg, Art: Your SEREs sound great. A couple questions about them...

- Is there a detent or other mechanism whereby the blade is biased back toward the handle? I.e., if you pull the blade out a bit and let it go, will it snap back in like most Spydercos? Or is it totally free-moving? (This is important one for me because of pending legislation in California (see the AKTI forum for details).)

- How scary-looking to sheeple is it? I know it's a tactical folder, but in that realm, where does it rank?

- I already have a Spyderco Wegner full size with a plain blade. Would buying the SERE 2000 be redundant? I like the fact there SERE rides lower in the pocket. Is it the same approximate size and weight of the Wegner?

Thanks for any info!

Johnny

Hi Johnny,
I'll try my best to address your questions.

First off, the "free moving" concern of the blade. That is exactly the case here with the SERE (*Note-that rhymes....he-he).

There is no spring assisted opening device on this knife. So you should be good-to-go there.

Now, the "how scary looking to sheeple is it" question. I won't lie here. It is slightly aggresive looking. No more so than many other tactical knives that many people carry. I do, however, use discression (sp??) in certain social situations before choosing to use this knife.

As for the Spydie Wegner to SERE comparison, I won't comment, 'cause I ain't knowing 'nuttin 'bout no Wegner.

Check out this thread for some further comments on the SERE from myself & others:

Also check out Al mar Knives and SERE 2000 for further info.

Hope this helps.

JLO: There is a method of holding the blade closed and biasing it closed when approaching the handle. It is subtle, but I can feel it.

It is, IMO, slightly less tactical looking than other "tact folders."

I have a large Wegner and an S2K. They are different knives. The S2K has a relatively pointy spear point with a faux sharpened swedge. It is a "piercing" bladeshape. The Wegner, as you know, is more of a skinner type blade. The Weg rides high in (out?) of the pocket where the S2K rides low in the pocket. The Wegner has only one liner where the S2K has two thick liners. The fit and finish of the S2K approaches (in some cases surpasses) custom work. Only my Buck Strider BG-42 is a tougher folder.

Johnnylighton,

Yes it does have a Ball and detent that keeps it closed (best way I can explain).
I also think it's not as tactical looking, it almost looks like something you'd see in "The Iron Chef". The thumbposts are unique. It looks like a barbell of sorts. They are rough but not sharp at all, It almost seems to rotate when you open it.
I wouldn't mind seeing a black blade and clip version for military use. I like the heft in this knife. The size is right for my hands and pretty comfy. I wasn't sure at first about the position of the lanyard hole but it works better than I thought.

I will probably have the work done, and the knife returned within 2 months. I will be very happy to post pictures.
