I was a SERE instructor from 93-98 and have recently been hired back as a contractor. I am interested in knifemaking and was going to take a look at some knife kits. I would be interested in a 3inch folder and a 5 inch fixed blade.

I have a Cold Steel Kukari and a Fiskars axe.

What would some good kits for around $50 be?

SERE :barf: :(

Look up Jantz or Sheffield's for knife kits. For $50 you could probably pick up 2 kits and have enough left over for some scales and epoxy.

Welcome to Bladeforums.

Serenate, unfortunately, military skills sometimes don't translate well over the internet. Some forums are highly representative of the overall public's demographics in having one member in a hundred who actually has military experience. That leaves 99 others with varying degrees of ignorance, or conversely, a token few who may know more about it than anyone could even believe.

Google "knife kits" and you will find a site loaded with quality kits that many benchmakers customize to sell for good prices. As is, the quality is high, and it doesn't take an extraordinary amount of work to put together a nice utility folder.

Be careful, you also may find them addictive, and a potential source of revenue.

Forums like this have set aside sections to discuss making knives, where real fans discuss techniques, and a sharing and caring attitude exists. You will find big name makers sometimes frequent them willing to discuss and help. They are by and large great people to get to know.

Putting together a kit is not the same as knifemaking, The kits never made sense to me when there are knife companies that do a good job of that allready. If you want to make your own you might want to research knife making instead.
