Gonna get either an Al Mar SERE or a Gerber Applegate Fairbairn. Can't afford both so need some advice, particularly from those who have used both. In case anyone want s to know what I'll be using the new blade for, let's just say EDC, backpacking, factory work and general let's-see-how-tough-this-baby-is kind of stuff.

I only have the Applegate-Fairbairn, but for edc the SERE might be the better knife. The dagger-shaped blade of the Gerber isn´t very suitable for every-day applications. The SERE blade looks a lot better for that.
The Applegate is a good knife, no doubt about that, but the SERE has the better ergonomics and blade steel.

SERE.

Built like a tank, sharpens easily to a scarey edge, multi-purpose. If I were to be allowed only one folder, this would be it. (And I own a Sebenza....)

I'm a pretty big Gerber fan, but the factory edge on the Gerber AF is poor and the steel is only ok.

The SERE is VG10 and G10 scales, a great design, sturdy with solid lockup, and sharp.

No contest IMO, I'd pick the SERE 2k. One of the best big folders out there.
