serial number?

I bought a blade on eBay #201 which the seller says was the first public run after the initial run of 1-200.
Does this make sense?
Probably not worth anything more than the regular blade but never saw a serial number on a Spyderco before.
model C58BMS

quote from listing: The knife is #201 which is the first release and the first number offered to public after collectors club (CC numbers are form 1 to 200).
What puzzles me is why number it if it was public offering? I mean is the number meant to set it apart from a different public issue?

What knife? Perhaps a picture (even if it's the seller's)?

The early collaboration models like your JD Smith there were numbered, at least for the first run. I have a Jess Horn and Centofante2 that are numbered, and I may have others as well.

I also own a variety of older Spydercos that are numbered beyond 200 (the Collector Club # limit) and I've never seen/read a satisfactory explanation of why certain knives are numbered and others are not.

Perhaps Sal or someone else from Spyderco can/will clarify this. However, I would agree that the # (any number) really doesn't make any Spyderco knife worth more than any other.

In fact, personally, when given a choice between a #'d and un#'d knife, I prefer to buy one that is un#'d because the # just creates confusion about it's value/origin and also because I think that #ing the knife detracts from appearance of the blade.

We've gone about numbering a "number" of ways. Collector club was numbered for a while. Collaborations were numbered for a while, now we're just numbering the collector club. though we have on occasion done numbering for special edition or for exclusive requests. Not consistent over the past 40+ years.

Thanks Sal et al.
I just never saw a numbered blade before and wondered about the origin/legitimacy.

I don't really mind if it's like CC or the like.
I was curious about this one as it's not like it's a LE or special issue.
Numbers on the ricasso are okay but this one right on the blade?
