Serial numbers again

I have spent a lot of time reading in the sections that I can get access to trying to figure out this serial number business some 153's have them some don't. Were there periods of manufacturing that they didn't use the numbers or are the nonumbered knives less desireable. There seems to be a wealth of information on here about what was built when and how and by who any assistance would be appreciated
