Serialized GECs

I've been looking for some of the older models from Great Eastern and the only ones I can find have a number engraved on the scale. I really don't like that and never bought any of those knives. If I do, how easy is it to polish the number off the scales? Is the engraving very deep? Thanks.

I don't care for them either, but I would just leave them on and carry it. I would be more worried about the older models having bear trap springs  .

I originally felt the same way, didn't care for the numbers either. But there were a few instances where I had no choice (other than to miss the opportunity to have a great knife), and in the end, the numbering is so slight, I hardly notice them at all. Add a little pocket wear and tarnish, and they practically disappear. I wouldn't worry about it.

I also am not the biggest fan of the numbering. If I can get a pattern without, I will choose without. On my one example, it is pretty shallow. I would just knock it about in the pocket and it will not be very noticeable.

I was recently caught out by this. The serialisation was on the blade....fair dos, I can live with that, but the bolster engraving *hmpf*

Guess they figure that with time the blade etch will wear, and the buyer/user would like a more permanent reminder of its limited run.

I don't think I've ever seen serial numbers on the blades. Blades do have "1 of 25" or "1 of 50" etc. but these are not serial numbers, which only appear on the mark side bolster.

I don't have any problem with the bolster numbering. In fact, I like "13's". I do however much prefer the older italicized numbers to the newer straight up ones....

But it's not really a big deal to remove them if one is so inclined, a little crocus cloth, some Flitz and you're done....

I agree with most people here, I could do without them on the bolster. But they certainly do tame down a lot with use and with a visit from metal polish once in a while.

There are some types who like to collect the same No. I hear.....:ambivalence:

I have three GEC's with serial numbers engraved on 'em and I don't mind. I don't look for specific numbers but I have two with #24 on the bolsters (an #85 and a #25) and #14 on a #61 Congress (on the ricasso of the coping blade.) I think the engraving on each is quite subtle and I don't really notice it...

Most of my GECs have serial numbers. The numbers do fade/get tame with some pocket wear.

I'd rather not have the serial number as I feel it gives the knife a cleaner look and its also cheaper. However, after you carry the knife and get the bolsters all scratched up, the serial number isn't really an issue. You can still make out 04 on this but it isn't really noticeable anymore. Blade etches are long gone.

I have a couple of #2s. I know GEC puts the #1s in their Factory collection, so it's kinda cool to have the (so-called) second knife produced, but only if the intention is to collect them.
On the knives I use, I don't even notice the numbers. I know they are there, but it doesn't matter.
