I am new to this forum. On another forum there was a post regarding Serrada Escrima. The question posed was, "Have you experienced Serrada as a technique within an art, or an art in and of itself in your training?" I thought it was a good question and the answers were varied and interesting. I would like to pose the same question here. So here it is. Let's wake this forum up.

hola Donna: I have experienced Serrada as a style unto itself.. I have been shown various versions or methods of this style..
Of all the versions Jimmy's ( Tacosa) made the most impression on me..Of course he's very talented and gifted individual in the art of SERRADA...
I have had VU ( Paul Vunak)refer to Serrada as a range of combat and a training methodology as well..

There is a system of FMA called Cabales Serrada Eskrima founded by GM Angel Cabales. From what I've read about the system, they like short sticks(18" to 22") and like operating in the corto range.

Serrada is an "art in itself", or as I would put it, a complete style of FMA, and a very complex and sophisticated one. It is by far the most challenging martial art I am familiar with. It contains techniques for stick vs. stick, espada y daga, and disarms. As we study it in the Inayan System of Eskrima, it is considered primarily a medio range style, corto being knives and empty hand. One does intend to close on the attacker in Serrada, but only into Serrada range, trying to stay out of punching range from the shield hand.

Pues, en la boca serrada, no entran moscas.
Not much help?
Hopefully more will be posted on it.

"Serrada" is a fighting "art" developed by Angel Cabales. The whole premise of Serrada is "in tight fighting". You can use shortened sticks or regular size sticks or knives or your empty hands. It deals with mid/close range blocking, striking, locking and disarming. Emphasis is on footwork, mechanics, flow and striking power. The feeling is that once you hit mid range someone is going to get hit real fast, or as Angel put it, he would "make someone look like an egg plant real quick". You don't want to be the reciever of the blows so it presses a hardcore flowing attack. "Serrada" is sometimes used to describe the range that "it" takes place in. This is somewhat appropriate however the range should be called "Sumbrada Range". The meaning of Sumbrada in this case is "to shadow" your opponent in a "counter for counter manner". In Serrada the but of the stick (punyo), Abanicos (fanning strikes), Sunkete's (thrusts), Flips, Upward/downward figure eights, Twist locks, Disarms/counter disarms and a flow of 12 continuous blows are used in a very tight structure. Here is how it fits into the matrix of Kali:

Projectiles: Blow darts, spears, throwing knives, rocks (modern day: firearms)

Improvised Projectiles: Coffe mugs, keys, books, bottles or anything you can throw.

Snake Range: Outside of contact range, your weapon hand moves in a very elusive manner to keep it a hard target.

Reverberation Range: The range where the sticks can onely make contact with eachother causeing a possible, deliberate reverberation in the hand causeing the stick to drop out.

Largo Mano Range: The range where the weapnn can only make contact with your opponets hand/arm. This is where you "generally" Defang the snake.

Sumbrada Range: Now you stick can reach your opponents head/body and you empty hand can now punch/lock/disarm. This is where "Serrada" takes place.

Beyond these there is Hubud range (trapping)
Punyo range - butting range - Dumog range - Grappleing.

Hopr this helps your understanding of Serrada.

"Serrada" is from the Spanish word "cerrar", which means to close. In the Filipino martial arts, it is a tactical concept which prevents the opponent from making any further move, thus he is closed. There is no specific range required in which to employ the tactic.
