Serrated blades: me no likey

One thing my Becker knives have taught me is I no longer like serrated or 1/2 serrated blades. I have a few, as matter of fact I think all my EDC folders are a combo blade. The main reason is the ability to sharpen them. Yes, I can do it, but it's a pain in the @ss if you ask me. And one of my favorite knives that is a combo, the manufacturer won't even sharpen the serrations.

I'm just sayin'...

I was 100% anti serrations until I handled Mingos Kabar Big Brother with spine serrations... That I can get into.

Never cared for them myself. I always felt they got in the way, other than for cutting rope.

I don't own any, but ESEE's serrations are all the same size, and a round file can get them sharp.

Half and half anything is never more than a convenience. But if you really need to work with one or the other I prefer either all straight edge or all serrated depending on what I need to do. JMO

For me its based on the task. The right tool for the job. But if I were in a one knife only survival situation, wilderness or urban, I would go for the straight edge.

I've been overlooking serrations this year, But I think I can sharpen them now so I might try again.

Oh I do have a vaquero grande, but I won't try to sharpen it yet....

several systems can sharpen them, and there are of course various round files.

most of the better named manufacturers offer lifetime sharpening last i knew, esp if they have weird serration patterns.

mostly, they are really good for certain chores, like rope, or webbing, and aren't typically use a lot, so they tend to be especially sharp and capable.

for wood? there's almost no point, except say, a wee little folding saw for notching and crafts and precision cutoffs maybe.

that's just my bs and imho :)

Thanks for pointing that out Bladite, cold steel will sharpen the Vaquero Grande for 7 dollars. That will save me hours...or days even.

Per Jeff, ESEE's serrations are designed to be sharpened with a regular stone. I've got a half and half ESEE 6. I haven't sharpened the serrations, but they appear to be easily sharpened with a regular stone and such. Serrations really rip through fiberous material, so may be useful. On a big knife like the 6, I think they're OK.

Serrations have a use, that's for sure, but I don't like them on the knife edge. I use all of my blade, and it just gets in the way.

One the spine of that Big Brother, that works out well, you get an aggressive drag cutter, and a long straight edge to work with.

They have their place, but it isn't on any of my blades. :D

I generally don't like serrations either.

However, I do kind of like the odd shaped, serrated blade on my Swisstool Spirit. I would never carry a serrated blade on my person, but I like having one on the multitool in my pack to be called on when cutting rope and such. You get serrations when you foresee needing them, and they're not in your way on your primary blade.

SE fan here. Stays sharp forever, even after using it like an idiot :o As a city boy my cutting chores are not to complicated. Have never found myself in need of a PE when using my SE's. If all I could ever use again was just a simple ole SE delica Id be sad but feel confident in the matter separating dept :D

whoops, didn't even relize I was in the becker forum(saw thread on forum home). I don't actually own any serrated beckers :foot::foot::foot: If its any consolation I have my, I think bk19 around my neck right now :D

I think they have their place, serrations that is. They will featherstick real good. I guess my main gripe with the serrations is placement, I like them just fine on the spine of a knife, but not the whole spine Because I shave pitchwood with the spine and I also use my spine as a striker for my ferro.

You make a good point about the serrated edges. My Grande Vaquero that I bought used of the exchange has some spots that are blunted and it still cuts cardboard as though the edge were excellent. If it were a plain egde I would surely notice the dull spots.
