If your like me you like serrations. Ya there a bitch to sharpen but the cool thing is you hardly ever need to sharpen them. So I decided to slap some serrations on a Basic #5. Man it rips through rope like BUDDER!

Mike,
Forgive me as I am new, but I saw those pics on 1stopknifeshop page. Are you the owner? Does this void the Busse warrenty or affect the knife in any way such as edge strength? How about turn around time? Thanks.

Yes I am the owner but don't hold that against me. It was my mothers fault I swear

It will not void your warranty. In fact I bet Jerry would love to see one. He is aware that I serrate his knives. We will have them on display at the Blade Show and I am sure he will be one of the first to visit

It does not effect the edge or strength at all. If you want me to serrate a knife you already own just send it in with $20 and I will turn it around in a day.

It looks nice Mike. Actually, I think a semi-serrated drop point #5 would be great.

Mike, do you think a folder with literaly 1-2 made serrations would pass through the airport?

My Mini-Reflex made it through all the time and it was a combo edge. I normally just put my knife in with my money as a money clip and that does the trick.

Mike,
Thanks. I know the blade on the Basic #5 is 5", how long is the cutting surface? And of that, how much is the serated portion? Lastly, can you increse the lenght of the serations? Thank you again.

Let me clarify my above statement.

I may have overstepped my bounds on the warranty issue. Let me clarify the serrations with Jerry first before I offer these for sale.

Let me verify the warranty issue first. If it voids your warranty you may want to change your order so hang tight while I find out for sure.

Don't worry about it Mike. I was ordering a Basic this week coincidentally anyhow. I just like your pic as well.

Riley :

affect the knife in any way such as edge strength?

All serrations are weaker than the plain edge as quite simply they don't have the surrounding steel to hold them in place. However the important question is, do they lower the strength enough so that for example they would distort during heavy chopping (more relevant to the larger ones blades). I don't know. The only way to be sure would be to get Mike to take one out and see.

Cliff,

I may be mistaken but I think he was referring to the rest of the edge, not the serrated portion. Yes the serrated portion will not be a strong as the rest of the blade as the angle will be different. The small points on the serration will be likely to be "dented" under chopping conditions. This is way I put the serrations at the rear.

Mike, Cliff
Actually, I meant being that the serations were added later, does it affect the heat treating or altering the knife in that sort of way. Not the actuall strength of the serrations that are inherent to any serrated edge, but by adding them after the knife is fully tempered and and finished.

Not if it is done right, which is why Jerry and I are talking about it.

Yes I do it right

Mike, could you post some pics of the Basic line's sheaths? There's a severe lack of the kydex pics.

Mike,
Thanks. I second Smoke on the Kydex sheath pics. I DID NOT mean to imply that you didn't do the serrations correctly! I guess I'm just over cautious when it come to spending money.
