Serrated edge machete?

I've found a machete that has got a serrated blade. What is the purpose of an edge like this on a machete?
Im wondering if this machete came out like this originally or someone had just put those serrations on ?

None whatsoever. Like teats on a bull.

My guess would be for cutting grasses and other soft vegetation. They would help grab the thin blades of grass/leaves/shoots. Serrations are common on sickles for the same reason.
