I have a SOG Navy Seal that I use for a camping knife that I had Tom put 5 serrations on. It's scary sharp. I haven't used it on anything really hard though, just rope and general camping duties. I have spent a few hours sitting in Tom's garage watching him sharpen my knives, listening to him talk about knives in general, different makers, etc. If he's not too busy he'll start bringing out pieces of his collection to show. He's got hundreds of knives. He carries a couple of pimped Spyderco Police knives that he serrated and mirror polished and they are wicked... I honestly do not believe that Tom would stand behind a product (his Serrations) that he didn't believe in. I don't think CRKT would license his design without putting it through some hard tests. I haven't read any of the comments about breakages so I can't comment on their veracity or how they were being used... Breakage is going to be caused by many factors: knife steel, heat treat, edge geometry, how it's being used, what's being cut...
Get a 550 blem for $120 and have him put 3 or 4 serrations on it. $10 per serration. See how it goes. I am in no way affiliated with Tom Veff, I just appreciate his knowledge, experience, love of knives, and quality workmanship.
