If you could have just one knife that was either plain or fully serrated, which would it be and why.

If I could only have one knife, it would be PE.

Here's a good article on this topic-Read And Remember.

It's really a personal preference though, I would recommend getting a PE first then work in an SE whenever your pocket allows. In addition I will recommend "two-step,(Spyderco, Spyderedge)" or concave serrations (scallops).

I wouldn't really recommend combo edge though.

Go all or nothing, either way.

It would depend upon its primary use.

If I were cutting fibrous materials or plastic mostly, serrated.

Else, plain. More versatility (especially when sharpened with different grits of stone).

Serrated because a serrated knife of 3.5 inches has the same cutting edge as a 4.4 inch plain blade and presents mutiple cutting edge angles to the material being cut. It also doesn't require as much sharpening because much of the edge is protected.

If you are looking for pure cutting ability here is a knife that has it and is used by many fire-para-rescue folks.

I personally prefer PE. I absolutely hate partially serrated. But I do like fully serrated (spyderedge). But if I could only carry one, it'd be PE all the way.

I'm firmly in the plain edge camp. while I agree that serrated has it's place the combo edge is evil and should be avoided at all costs. ahgar

Although I have several serrated blades I would prefer a plain edge. It is easier to maintain and is IMHO a better looking knife.

Definitely plain edge. I break out in hives whenever I have to sharpen a very dull serrated knife.

Plain.

A sharpener for plain blades is easier to improvise than a sharpener for serrated blades (in case you don't have one with you).

Plain Edge ONLY ! I hate the 4 Delica 4 SE's that I bought for my warehouse guys. I gave mine away. I just see nothing positive about SE. Its not a smooth cut; hard to sharpen; can't impress anyone by shaving your arm:D and generally drag through the medium you are cutting. If I was a lumberjack, maybe it would be useful for sawing very small branches if the proper equipment wasn't available.

Never AGAIN on SE!

Apparently, you've never properly sharpened a SE knife. They are just as easy to sharpen on a proper sharpener, and mine can do all the things you just said they can't.
