Which is the most versatile wheel type? I am thinking of buying one of Rob Frinks grinders and I want to get it set up right. I'm thinking of doing mostly flat grinds but I want the option of hollow grinding in the future. Also, what size is most versatile? Darrel recommends 14" in his newsletter to get the best of both worlds.

Belts will last longer (and cut more aggressively) with a serrated wheel, but better finishes will be obtained with a smooth one. The durometer of the wheel is also a factor in finish.

I use a 14" wheel myself, not much of a hollow grind but a great starting point for a flat grind. Serrations are good but "V" shaped serrations are best, runs cool and does not show the chatter marks of the an angle cut serration.
