I'm considering the purchase of CQC7. Not sure which variation yet (7, 7B, Mini, or Super). What are the advantages and disadvantages of serrated vs. standard or Satin vs. Black finish? Is the black finish easily marred from routine use or sharpening?

the black finish is very easily marred by most anything that rubs it not to mention routine use/sharpening, just like black coating on all knives. unless ya go skindiving or something (that needs a lot of corrosion resistance and ya dont ever oil it) i would stay away from all coatings, myself,

unless there is some specific reason ya need serrations (ie ya cut lots of rope....) i would stay away from them myself, imho they dont look as good as plain edge, the re-sale value and desiribility of the knife is higher w/a plain edge, the serrations arent easy to sharpen, personally i dont like combo edge knives, some knives like a spyderco police i think look better serrated, nothing looks better part serrated imho.

if i was looking for another '7 i would get a std tanto blade one, or the super, not the spearpoint, i just dont like any spear point EKI's, myself.

have ya ever seen a SOCFK, the are a specwar handle w/a '7 blade and they are waved, $140 at extreme outfitters, a lot better knife imho than a '7, but '7s are ok too. but if ya have never seen 1 ya should check it out, the SOCFK is my fav non custom emerson. CQC8's are cool also, very close to the custom really.

good luck ,

Emerson will serrate most of their knives for $25.00, so if you bought the plain edge then decided that you need the serrations, just send it in. But obviously will not work the other way around. I know that the Karambit cannot have serrations put on it though.
