Last week i finished a titanium neck knife for a guy at work, he had some money problems and couldn't pay the rest of the price(he had already given me a diposite)so instead he offered to trade 2 spyderco civilians and the deposite money which was fine by me because all i ask for a deposite is teh cost of materials + 5% of the knife cost.Anyway one of the civies is Plain edge with carbon fiber handles and the other is all aluminum with serrations and let me tell you they are two totaly different looking knives. the one with the serrated blade makes people cringe when i show them and they go "wow that would hurt" or "thats gotta be illegal. on the otherhand when i show people the plain edge version of the same knife they say things like" very interesting blade shape" or " what a beautiful blad, very unigue" and my favorite and yes some one acctually called it this" wow what a nice gentlemens knife very classy looking" Its truely amazing how much serrations scare people and how much it changes the way people look at a knife. I too definatly see a difference in appearance between the serrated and plain edge civilians. the civie is my only serrated knife so that may have something to do with it.

Hey Sharpmaker,

Ti knives are real rad. Can you post a picture of some of you're work?
Do you use the alpha or the beta alloys? Is 6AL 4V or 6.6.3 better for knife making?
thanks-dan

The danger of serrations is all a popular misconception. Plain edged knives are every bit as lethal as serrated ones. But yes, most people are more intimidated by a serrated knife than a plain edged one, so if you're going for that type of look, by all means choose serrated. I still prefer plain edge, however.

back when we were allowed to have pointy things on planes, a 3 inch plain-edge was ok to have, but serrations made it "menacing" and therefore not allowed on the plane. completely arbitrary.

...So what you are saying is that if my REKAT Sifu had serrations, that people would pass-out in complete horror, rather than simply running-away, eveytime I whip-out my Sifu and thumb it open?.:D..:D.

I love spydie serrations. Nothing like em, imho.

BTW, why the hell is there knife content in the Community Center?!

*smooch*

Hiya SM!
I'm moving this to General so's it can get more notice... or something.
Community's for "off topic" stuff, like jokes, stories, medical uses for goat's bladders, etc.
Anyways, no big deal, just moving it where it belongs.

No doubt about the serrations.Just ask The Tactical One.Did you hear about that guy Sharp Maker?;)He damn near lost his arm to a serrated Spyderco Civilian.I think Spyderco serrations look cool.

Can you imagine, Troy, how difficult it would be to make knives if you'd nearly had your arm cut off? How many one-armed knife makers are there? ;)

I heard about him and the pointless thread about is near amputation. if you look at all his threads they almost all have one thing in common. they are all about how he got screwed one way or another. in one he get harassed by a cop over a flashlight and another hes getting kicked out of micky D's and then he gets his arm fubared....desparate for attention:rolleyes:   i actually believed that whole thing happened until i searched his other thrades to se he he was BS proned cause alot of people thought he was talking trash:barf: :barf: :barf:

I personally know one who lives close by.

Besides making an occasional knife out of D2 & scrap files, he makes his living making & regrinding machine tools. (end mills, ect.)

You'd simply be amazed at how this guy operates with one arm. I have a great deal of respect for his talent & abilities. (Besides, he is the guy who taught me how to gring & build machine tools) :)

As for serrated knives, I used to be on that bandwagon, but have stepped off for the most part. I find a plain edge does me just fine in everyday use.

You may well be correct with some people, but I have never found that to be the case myself. I have owned a Spyderco police with partially serrated blade for at least 8 years and have never had anyone make the comments that you mentioned. Now, when I was carrying my Madd Maxx with 5.5 inch blade, everyone asked me if it was legal to have such a knife.

I know this is going to sound odd and I personally do not believe it but a friend of mine told me he was in court once ( not at HIS trial) and he heard a judge trying to argue this point...
- the blade in point could not be over three inches long but due to the serration's...if you were to actually straighten out the serration's...the blade length would be much longer...
so this guy was arguing that the blade length for knives with serration's should be actually measuring UP and DOWN the serration's.

anyone heard of that ?

Tony Perez:

I haven't heard of something like that but I'm not too surprised. The judge wanted a conviction so bad he was willing to be an a-moral a-hole to get it.

Either that or he's a total 'tard and shouldn't be wearing the robes of office in the first place.
