Is there any reason NOT to have serrations on an SD knife?

I recently ordered a partially serrated Emerson Commander and was wondering if I should have gone with a plain edge. I wanted the serrations for the odd piece of rope or banding that I have to cut every now and then, but the knife's primary purpose is self defense when I can't carry a gun.

Could the serrations cause any problems?

There are a ton of threads about the epic plain edge vs serrated edge debate. The serrations aren't necessarily going to give you problems. I prefer a PE blade, and many PE supporters are going to tell you the same thing: anything you can cut with a SE, you can cut with a PE.

You've already placed the order so just enjoy the knife when you get it. If you discover that you don't like the serrations, just avoid them in the future.

PS - Knives for SD? Not the best idea. You'll be better off with pepper spray IMHO

it'll work fine for SD imho, but i do prefer plain edge myself.

why?? PE is easier to sharpen, better re-sale, cuts just as well.

but, either way it will work just fine for SD, thats really what all EKI's are designed for,SD, not utility, ,

as far as OC/etc i would carry a knife AND OC if it was me, and a pistol too, mayber a 5 "C" cell maglite too lol.

i wouldnt ever depend on just OC, though its always worked for me.

The only issue i see with a serrated knife for SD is when winter rolls around the serrations might get hung up in the other guys thick winter clothing. But yours is only partially serrated. If you find serrations useful for utility, then good, you'll be using it that way more often anyway, plus you'll get used to drawing it. I admit they're more work to sharpen, but we should all enjoy taking care of our knives here anyway. I think you chose well.
