I've never seen any Damascus bladed knife with serration's is there a reason way?
I have a Damascus Microtech L-UDT that I'd like to get serration's on!
Is there a reason why I shouldn't? BTW it's Devin Thomas raindrop FWIW

Greg, I have never seen serrations on damascus but I think it would look great! Devin makes some of the best steel ive ever seen. I say do it. Bruce

I don't remember seeing any damascus with serrations before either. I don't know if it was because they thought the damascus would delaminate around the serrations or if it just didn't go with the style intended. Go to the buck website ( www.buckknives.com ) and look in the custom shop for 110's I know that damascus and partially serrated are both options.I don't remember if you could get them both though. If I had to guess I would say that serrations are left out because they would put a flaw in the damascus pattern. The steeper angle would make the layers show up alot differently. One thing to watch for with getting serrations added to your knife is the finish. Damascus has to be treated with an acid to make the different layers show up properly. If you regrind the steel it will look different than where it has been treated. I don't know if retreating the whole blade would lead to one part being darker than another or not.
It may be difficult to grind damascus after heat treat also. Since different steels have different levels of carbon and other alloys, each one will harden a little differently. It may be hard to get good grinds when there are soft and hard spots in the steel.I'm not sure on this though. These are just my thoughts on having it done, I would try and find out more before I had anything done.

The layers in damascus already have microscopic serations, thats the reason it cuts the way it does. I too wonder what effect serrations would have on the laminations, I've had damascus become delaminated before, after the heat treating. I contacted the seller, a blacksmith in Nebraska and he sent me a new piece of steel, telling me it was the result of old flux and advised me that he thought file work could cause delamination too, in some patterns. That might be the same with serations.
