Serrations

Hi everyone,

I'd like to hear what you guys think about those combo half serrations / half plain edge knives.
I have a Seal Pup and my personal experience is that most of the time I don't need the serrations. In fact they are in the way when I want to do some detailed cutting. And when I do need them I want them to be more in the middle of the blade. (I wonder how a Seal Pup would perform when the serrations are moved 1" towards the tip)

Maybe you wonder why I just don't buy a plain edge knife? Well, I have a SOGTech but it's a little bit to big to my taste. The only SOG knife that would fit my needs is the Pentagon, but unfortunatly a double edged knife is an illegal weapon in my country.:(
So what I'd like to see from SOG is a small SOGTech (or bowie/trident)
or a Seal Pup wihtout the serrations.
Ron, any chance that SOG would make such a knife?

Greetings,

Timba.

Hi Timba,

Thanks for your comments. To add a variation to an existing knife and stock/market the items, we would need to know that the item would be a big seller. The item you are describing would not have a big buyer following.

We do have the Field Knife coming soon. This one might suit your needs.

Bummer:(

How big is that field knife? Is it about the same size as a Seal Pup? If so it may fit my needs. Only problem is I like the bowie style blade of the Pup.

On some of my knives with a combo edge, I've smoothed out the serrations to varying degrees. Depending on how much the serrations have been ground down, there is still a reduced serrated effect. It works well like this. To grind down the serrations I use a regular sharpening stone.

Timba, are double-edged knives illegal to purchase and possess, or "just" illegal to carry in Belgium?

Swedish knive laws don't distinguish between single- and double-edged blades.

I'm not a law expert and the law in Belgium is often so confusing or vague, so my answer to this question may be incorrect. But i'll give it a try.
From what I understand a double edged knife is an illegal weapon. And it is forbidden to own, manufacture, repair, sell, ... an illegal weapon.
But when I recently asked a local knife dealer, he said that it is no problem to own a double edged knife, but that you can't carry it.
Given the fact that I haven't studied the law in great detail I'd go with the story of that dealer.

Thanks for the tip marty123.
Isn't it a lot of work to smoothen those serrations?
I'm also a bit worried about modifying my knife. I'm a little bit concerned I'll ruin it.

Timba: Smoothing out serrations is easy. I use a small, cheap, sharpening stone, measuring about 1" x 4". You don't need a good stone for this. The stones I use for this purpose are rough, coarse stones made in Taiwan and cost me 2 for $1. I just rub away at the serrations, frequently checking to see when to stop. It doesn't take long. I don't remove the serrations entirely, but you could if you want. And, you won't ruin the knife by doing this. It's hardly a major modification, although I understand your apprehension. Afterwards, the blade slices through material without the grabbing effect that you get with serrations. Serrations have their place, mind you, but if you don't like them, just grind them down. Go slowly at first and you'll see.

I have to agree with Timba
I would have bought a SEAL, SEAL pup, NW ranger and a Tsunami if they came in plain edge.
I use my Leatherman WAVE or Spydie Rescue jr if I need serrations

Try the SOG Tech, it has almost the same blade geometry as the SEAL, the size is about midway between it and the Pup... but without the serrations. An alternative is to find a TechII which is a little bigger, about the same blade as the SEAL.
