Serrations?

I want to buy a new RC-3 or RC-4 for a survival knife (forget Ontario). So my question here is this: Would serrations make the knife more versatile? If so, are there any cons to having the serrations? Just thought I'd bring it to the experts. :)

Welcome I see you are new here.

I don't own the serrated version but the serrations would help you if you ever get your leg or arm stuck in between rocks. They will act as a saw and cut your flesh and bones fast and you will be free. Take plenty of ductape for any bleeding.

Glad to help!

I picked up the SE (serrated edge)RC4 and I will tell you that the serration on the RC line up will out do any blade maker serrations, best I have seen.I like the serration for the fuzz stick factor for one example ,you can save the PE(plain edge) part of the blade for other duties and use the serratin for making fuzz sticks or fire sticks and you can also use the serration notches for the striker if you use a firsteel....and not have to remove the coating on the spine.plus if you need something cut like rope or web straps ,they will cut thru it quickly...I could go on but I think you get the picture..Thanks TTD

I think it will come down to personal preference. If you're a PE guy otherwise, I doubt the Rc-4 serrations will change your mind.

Every blade I own is PE except the RC4....so outta 30 + fixed blades I own one serrated the RC4 and do not mind buy more serrated RC blades....if you by a RC knife how can you go wrong PE or SE...

I use to be a strict plain edge guy myself but now I find myself carrying a partially serrated blade more and more. Maybe it's just that I'm getting lazy and don't care to sharpen a knife as much as I use to :D

I was the same as RAT until I came to the realization that I don't really use the back part of the blade very often. I decided to try a partially serrated and now that is the bulk of what I order. Don't get me wrong.... I still get one of each on most of the blades I buy just in case I decided I want a straight edge that day.

Thanks for all the info. (Except maybe the part about cutting off my own leg. :))

If that really bothers you you can probably have someone else cut it off for you.:)

Just kidding. I received a RC-4 today with serrations and I have to admit that they have an unique design, and look to be very serviceable. I'm a "plain edge" guy myself but I like them.

Tom
