Since we seem to have quite a few members who are dog owners, I thought I might ask here:
Does anyone here own / use / train service dogs? I am seriously considering getting one for myself. So far what I am seeing is a huge expense for a fully trained dog. Waiting periods for professionally trained service dogs can also be up to four or five years, with a lot of hoops to jump thru such as fees, applications, qualification criteria and home visits, etc.
Is owner training a viable option? I am willing to put in the time and have some experience training bloodhounds for SAR, just not service dogs for specific imparements.
Also... is it true that Federal ADA laws trump State and local laws? I ask this in regards to certification requirements and proof thereof and access.
