Serving up JustRight some leftovers

Frank C. ("JustRight") sent me his Bilton to be duded up. Been working on it in my spare time, which has been pretty sparse lately. Thought y'all would like to see how it's progressing. Leftovers? Yup, every bit of it done from scraps. The brown leather covering on the scabbard was a piece snagged from a scrap bin. The cute little accessory karda was ground from a scrap piece of file left over from making another blade. It's handle is a scrap piece of burmese rosewood left over from making something else, and the brass bolster was salvaged from a 5.56 cartridge casing left over from, well never y'all mind about that.;) Anyhow, Frank, here's how it's shaping up, I'll get started on the frog tonight.

My wife get all upset a lot of times. I keep all kinds of scraps from almost ever project that we do around here. Before she got her new salon open she had a yard sale. And, just sure as shooting it wasn't a week later I fond a use for one of the things I allowed her to sell.

Do you suppose I'll learn some day?:)

Thanks guys, I just hope Frank C. likes it. Now comes the tricky part, I want the frog to look really nice, and it has to incorporate a sub-scabbard for the karda. Pics to come.:D

Absolutely charming....

There are some real craftsmen here. Maybe you might want to make a version of an early karda. They have graceful lines and work just as well as the newer model. The longest one shown here is 6 3/8" long.

Sarge is it the practice or were you always that talented?

Beauty of a picture of the old Kardas. :)

Definitely Pappy, it's like I tell my fellow archers, "archery is all luck, the more you practice, the luckier you are".(says the current holder of 1st place in the kingdom in the period long bow division;) )

JDP, shame on you, my neighbors already eye me warily, something to do with the flickering lights produced by showers of sparks emitting from the windows of my garage late at night. One of these days they'll be formed up out on my front lawn wielding torches and pitchforks.  Hopefully not before I get a chance to do up one of those wild looking, "old school", kardas you were kind enough to share pics of with us. What y'all reckon fellers, would that make a cool neck knife or what?

The middle one is definitely the winner in the bunch. My version is going to have to have slightly less curvature because of limitations in my materials (big old files) and production method (stock removal vs.forging). The steel bolster is easy enough, mine will be solid and made out of mild steel. At first glance I thought the handles were horn, but looking closer they appear to be well patinated wood (correct me if I'm wrong John), so I'm thinking rosewood or coco bolo will do the trick.

Or better.
I like the way they let you choke up on the cutting edge.

Beautiful. :)
