set a detent and proper size for a given lock

so I've searched everywhere for setting detents and there's many options, placing a smaller hole in the blade same spot the detent is. placing it a couple of thousands further, and so on.

Somehow, I managed to get the same spot detent in quite a decent action (with help from forums) but i noticed that
one, my detent isn't making that good a flipper.
two, the blade isn't sucked in when you're trying to close it.

any tips and tricks specially for the latter?

on the other hand, what size goes best with a given length of a lock? I ask this because (as i sort of remember from school) you have and increased pressure on small surfaces (assuming you have the same force applied by the lock). So what works best for flippers in these two?

thanks in advance, and sorry if there's something related to this somewhere else

Try taking out your stop pin and seeing where the detent "sets" (engages the detent fully) and how tight it is. If it is sets further back from the normal position by a bit and is strong try grinding a bit off of your choil to let it close a hair further... thus engaging the detent more strongly.

If the blade wiggles when shut or removing the pin does not change the detent relationship nest time try offsetting it further back.

Lockbar tension, thickness, detent depth all are important too... does the lockbar sit even with the frame when riding on the detent ball, etc?

Is your detent dent deep enough... does it have straight sides or is it rounded? chamfered?

With a deeply set detent (straight sided deep hole in blade), moderate lock pressure and proper ball depth you can get a folder to practically lock shut...

I feel that a 1/16" ball will work on just about anything short of a folding machete but would like further input on this, I haven't made any massive folders yet.

Best of luck with all!

My detent is 1/16. Problem is, once i bend the lockbar into the position i want it to lock, i cant open the knife even with two hands. its impossible.
pushing the detent a little further inside the lockbar has helped it open but i keep loosing that strong closing action. it could also be a problem with the lockbar strength... i'm at 80 thousands so i may have to thin that down to 60.

i'll give this a try and see what i come up with.
