you have ABS qualifications, axe throwing contests, rope cutting, axe shaving, etc. how would you draw up the ground rules for slicing? how enthusiastic would attendance be?

just for the rules, here are my ideas:

1. by category (fixed blades and folders)
2. execution - one or two basic tests will be done by impartial testers. the rest of the tests will be done by the contestants.
3. there will be judges using a point system for every test.
4. the tests will be in chronological order:

1)hair whittling qualifier (contestant) - at least three visible splits on a single strand of human hair, no misses, no tree-topping. judges will decide whether or not your entry can go on to complete the contest.
2) rope cutting (testers) - 20 complete cuts on a 1-inch manila rope (testers will push-cut using only one part of the edge to preserve the rest of the edge.) judges will score apparent ease and time.
3) paper slicing (testers) - apply the entire length of the edge on a number of soft paper sheets (phone book, printing paper, glazed paper, etc.) judges will not apparent ease, snags, and rolls.
4) hair whittling part two (contestant) - allow stropping on untreated leather or some other material for 5 minutes before commencing. this is free-style. do your best to impress the judges.

Sounds like my average evening minus the rope cutting and plus a couple cold beers, lol. Whittle hair, slice paper, strop, repeat.

start less abrasive and work the way up, if you do it your way, after the rope cut part, only the people with high end steels (xhp for example) will be able to go on.

how about:

HHT#5 Hair severs and falls down on contact with the edge - At this level, the hair wants to pop much more than it wants to split
HHT#4 hair pops and jumps from the edge on contact, - can often pop instead of split
HHT#3 Hair splits
HHT#2 hair whittles
Toilet paper cut with no draw
Toilet paper slice
cut TP by hitting the edge into it
Cut printer paper that has been submerged for 3 seconds (Uber hard to do)
slice phonebook paper with grain
slice phonebook paper across grain
Push the phonebook paper IN to the edge , you arent pushing th knife in the paper, youre pushing the paper into the edge
slice down a straw , hold the bottom, cut from the top down to 2" of your finger
pushcut or slice a tomato
get a 3 ft piece of paracord and hold it up, slice it in half while it hangs

I have videos for most of these, My videos give an idea how hard they are, if you're interested, ill post some of the tests on this thread. Im just giving you ideas :D

I agree, pretty boring. I like a sharp knife but I wouldn't even watch more than a couple minutes of YouTube videos. There might be a dozen or two people in the world that would sit through the whole thing. I think attendance would consist of the few knife geeks that are participating. Even at a larger venue like Blade.

I also don't see the point in having someone else cut with the knife. If the knife and user can do it, then good job. What if the tester goofs up? Why should the contestant be punished?

Just don't see it.

We did it all the time when I was a Butcher. When I was a union meat cutter, we would have to travel some in the summer while people were on vacation. When someone came to my store, or I went to one, the first thing I would do was challenge someone. I loved it.

Don't think I would watch someone cutting rope or paper though.
