Ok, I'm not a recurve fan, sorry to all of you who are :p. I'm really liking the looks/specs of the ZT0350KW (knifeworks satin model), but I hate recurves. Anybody have experience with grinding out the recurve into a spear or drop point, whether on this model or something similar? Can it be done, what are the complications and things to watch out for, if I don't want to do it myself who should I talk to? Is it more trouble than it's worth?

Thanks all!

Tom Krein straightens out recurves all the time. He's doing a couple for me now.

I've never done it myself,so I can't be too much help for you there.

Send it out to Tom, unless you feel like sitting in front of a diamond stone for several hours!!

I know Tom Krein does that sort of work. Here is a de-recurved ZT0200 and a Lahar.

If you have a grinder and/or sandpaper and lots of time (and a bit of skill), give it a shot. There isn't much recurve to remove on the 0350.

Phillip

p.s. The 0350 is a very nice knife. I want to get one myself.

Wow, that ZT is amazing! And I see the coating was stripped too, so I might not even have to get the KW version. This may be a better question for Tom, I don't know, but how much of the thickness will be lost? The 0350 is only a hair under an 1/8" to begin with. If I were to go with the bigger 0200 at .156" thick, would that work better? I like the overall specs of the 0350 a lot better, I'm just curious about thickness.

I've got a derecurved, reprofiled, convexed, satin finish ZT300 :)

you won't lose any of the spine thickness, and the edge could be thinner or thicker, depending on what you as for. The blade is going to get thicker the less wide you make it (removing the recurve) so whoever regrinds it is going to have to thin it back down to make it usable again.

i have straightened out a few recurves and didnt have to thin the entire blade down to make it usable again. you can concentrate on sharpening just the belly of the blade and work the recurve out yourself or do it in a few minutes with a belt sander if you have access to one.

if the blade was initially hollow ground, the original bevel could maintain a thin enough profile, but a flat grind would thicken the closer it gets to the spine.

the only way i would ever re-profile a blade is if there were absolutely no other purchase options. if i hated recurves i wouldn't buy a blade with a recurve.

now that is REALLY nice work customizing a zt300 to a drop point...just don't call it a zt300 anymore..

These are awesome, exactly what I'm looking for. I left Tom Krein a voicemail to see what we can do

Also, could someone please tell me the overall thickness of each of these knives, the ZT0200 and ZT0350?

Thanks!

That's fine...but they dont make one.

If they DID, they'd sell a lot more I suspect.

The only reason I don't have a ZT0302 right now...is the recurve. I contacted Tom Krein about a month ago and got no reply.
It's great to see that he has in fact, done that sort of thing on that knife for others.
I may get one...and try him again.

Or..keep the Lahar I just got and am trying to trade. Looks great also straightened out.

That's the only reason I'm considering it...they don't make any non-recurves other than the MUDD which I already have. It's such a high quality knife at a great price...this one time I don't mind making a bit of an improvement.

I called Tom Krein today and left a voicemail. He called back about a half hour later and was extremely helpful.:thumbup:

Also before it falls into the depths...anyone know the overall thickness of the ZT0200?
