Square_Peg offered up a good tip awhile back; don't finish trimming your hang until at least a week or two after initially setting the wedge. I used a dry haft and dry wedge to complete a hang early last week and set the wedge by smartly smacking it, until it wouldn't move anymore, with a sledgehammer over a flat piece of hardwood (so the wedge wouldn't shear or break). Yesterday I smacked the wedge once more and was quite surprised to find that it readily went in another 1/8 - 3/16 inch. That head is on plenty tight now but it is my intent to wait until mid winter, when the humidity is 'nosebleed' low (Ontario, Canada) before giving it one final smack. Leaving a wedge 1/4 inch (or more) proud of the handle for awhile after completing a hang will pay off over the long run.
