Setting the correct angle on a PDX Heft 6?

Hey all,

I just got a heft 6, and I was disappointed in the factory edge. I set the knife up in my WE and tested the factory angle. It ended up at 30*. I sharpened it at that angle, but afterwards it was still dull. I'd like to change the angle to around 20*, but not sure wether 20* is correct for this type of knife. Would 25* be better than 20*?

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Anything over 20 degrees per side and the angle becomes too obtuse for proper performance. The angle behind the sharp apex needs to have a geometry that allows the cut material to pass by smoothly or with the least resistance. If too obtuse then the force needed to push the blade through the material becomes greater than the force needed for the edge to cut it.

Thanks knifenut. My plan is to regrind it to at 20* angle. I tried to use it last night, and with a 30* angle, it felt like I was using a butter knife.
