Setup New Speakers

I'm an idiot when it comes to Audio/Video setup. Here's the deal. I just received a pair of Bose 201 bookshelf speakers. I had thought I could just plug them into the back of my Toshiba 55" TV and they would work. There are extra audio outputs back there so I connected some other cheapo speakers just to test and they didn't work.

So, I'm thinking I need receiver. Do you agree? I don't anticipate adding any additional speakers because the room isn't setup for it. What type of receiver do I need (# channels) and what model is recommended.

Thanks.

Well, it depends on what kind of output you have on the TV. If you have external speaker jacks, then you could run speakers directly off of the TV. Normally, if the TV has speakers built in, you won't have an external speaker connection. You will more than likely have a Audio Left and Right out. This would be line/pre-amp level out. This signal would go to an amplifier or receiver like you mentioned. You could go with a simple stereo receiver if you only want to run those two speakers. You can go with simple home theater receiver for a little more money and could have the room to expand it in the future. It really just depends on what you think you want to do in the futre.....that's always a good consideration when purchasing equipment like this. I would recommend Yamaha as far as receivers go. I use them and recommend them/install them for customers. I work for a Pro Bose dealer and use alot of the Bose speakers but sometimes go with other electronics to do the rest of the job.
