Hello all.
I am new to this forum and am not a knife designer, collector, or someone who wants to waste money on one seperate knife for every different use. Im all about simple efficency, and i dont want to waste my time wondering which knife to carry on what day of the week or trying to predict what the universe has in store for me that day, so I can make the right choice. Thats why I like my Camp Tramp, its simple, tough, versatile and suits almost all of my outdoor needs. I'm looking a bulletproof folder, most important qualities being toughness, versatility, and quality design. Being an auto would also be nice, if theres no great compromise in the locking strength etc. I was thinking about a Severtech Spartan. I have read of severtech's bomb-proof design, but would rather not take a tanto-tip, seeing as I'm looking for a one-knife deal. That leaves the Spartan. It looks nice, although the handle doesn't look that ergonomic (can anyone comment on this?). Is this knife really worth 500 of my hard earned dollars? It seems that a price like that is rediculously high, even for a high quality product.

Seeing as you are so impressed with the Camp Tramp, why not get a Rat Trap folder? Same quality, and same philosophy.

The SR website doesn't seem to get updated very often. Do a search in the rat chat area, and you'll find quite a few threads referring to the Rat Trap.

The Spartan model is a custom, handground version of a CNC manufactured knife. This, plus the fact that it "starred" in the movie Spartan is the reason its price is twice that of the standard model. The Severtech is about as tough as a folding knife gets. It's also big, heavy, and blocky. I love my Severtech, but it doesn't see much time in my pocket. It's large for my hands, big in the pocket, and like you, I don't much care for tantos. But I have every confidence in the knife being able to take anything I can dish out.

If you want a big, tough auto, I'd reccomend looking at Dalton. I don't know what the length limit is in your area, but something like the Tank, Dragon, Battledragon, Tiger, M12, Packer, or Warcom makes for a beefy knife. The Benchmade 5000 and 4200 also have a strong, solid feel to them.

For a non-auto, look at the SW Rat Trap, Stider AR or SMF, Spyderco Manix or Military, Benchmade 630, 710 or 806. All big, all strong, and except for the Striders, much less than the Severtech Spartan.

Or, just get the Spartan. It might take a while, because these are custom ordered (you can probably get it coated and/or non-serrated too, but it might cost). It'll last forever and then some, and 10 years down the road when you're still using it, you'll have long forgotten the initial cost.

Thanks for the input guys. I will surely take a look at your suggested models. Hopefully I'll make the right choice and not have to buy a new folder for at least acouple years. I don't mind a beefy folder that doesn't fit well in my pocket, as I'm not looking for an EDC, just a reliable tool that will serve well when I need it most. One quick question though, what was your impression on the auto function of the spartan? A quick deployment is important if im only going to be carrying one knife, and who knows when I'm going to need it ready for action at a moment's notice. Does the auto function contend with the lock strength or add to unwanted blade-play?

If you need quick deployment and are worried about an auto mechanisim...go with an emerson with the wave. It's pretty much faster that an automatic knife from the pocket.

I took alook at the Daltons, and the Tiger looks like a nice choice. Funny cuz I had actually never heard of this manufacturer before your response. Its a shame that I can't get the chance to check out these models in person, as pretty much the only thing I can get my hands on at home (vancouver) are mass produced, over-priced models that have to resort to "tactical" advertisement to jack up their prices. I have heard questionable things about locking etc of the Emersons, and although I'm sure their knives are probably well made, there seems to be alot of hype surrounding them. I try to steer clear of hype and ad campaigns, and question the credibilty of the manufacturers who employ them. I dont wanna pay an extra 300 bucks because a knife is "the choice of the navy seals", or "trusted by spec ops units world wide". Its hard to find a manufacturer who doesn't resort to these lowly adolescent luring ploys. I want a knife because I can trust it, not because there are pictures of guys brandishing it sneaking through the jungle on the website (strider). Why would a manufacturer resort to these ploys if he trusted the quality of his product? Doesn't make much sense to me.

Man I got excited when I saw this one!!! It looks perfect for my needs, and the reviews I've read tell what exactly what I wanted to hear. Can't beleive this ones not on the website, they could be losing major business on this one. Those uninitiated into the circle of die-hard knife aficianados (like myself) would never even know it was out there. Thank god for blade forums! I gotta get me one of these. Thanks again. :D

Glad you like the Rat Trap.

It's available to order off of the Swamp Rat orderring page.

For manual opening, I would be looking at one of these.
The BM710HS is the fasted opening, the Rat Trap is the best slicer and, the Manix is the most indestructible.

Don't confuse DarkOps with knives that actually exist and are used.

There is a guy here on the forums who owns a Spartan. He may want to sell it. Perhaps he'll post here. Me, I like the tanto. It is my EDC at work and a real workhorse.

If he does want to sell it, I hope he doesn't post it here on the Blade Discussion Forum. It can go on a sales forum or to email, thanks.
