I decided to be thrifty and try my hand at leatherwork. I went to the local Tandy Leather store here in town and spent about $55 dollars on a chunk of leather, some needles, thread, and a few tools. The chunk of leather was big enough to make 4 FBM sheaths and since I don't have 4 FBMs, I made a sheath for my SFNO and now am looking for something else to make pants for (I know, I know, I'm like a kid with a new toy... ).

This was my first time ever working with leather, and I think the results were pretty good. Each one took me about 3 or 4 evenings to do. If any of you are considering trying to make your own sheaths, by all means, give it a shot. It's really not that hard and it is immensely rewarding.

This leather was 8 or 9oz and was already dyed a nice tan color. In the intrests of full discloser, the backs don't look nearly as neat...:o

Thanks. :D I keep telling my wife and family how easy it was but they won't believe me. They seem to think I have gift for leatherwork. I don't, but I've spent enough time building stuff out of sheetmetal that I have a pretty good idea of how stuff should be assembled.

Nice work there! :) Please keep showing your work.

I don't know how the pros do it but heres how I did it. Wet the sheath with warm water till its pliable not saturated, put the knife in and start rubbing it down around the knife edges with a tool that is rounded and completely smooth. I hear the pros use boning tools but I used the handle from any old baby spoon that had no sharp edges whatsoever. Any line or edge on your "boning" tool will scrape the leather. Do it till you get the shape you want and then carefully remove the knife and reshape gently as necessary to fix any thing that got out of whack as you slipped the knife out. Place somewhere to dry (Not in direct heat or sunlight) and leave it alone for 24 hours or so. Don't leave the knife in the sheath! The first one I did I wrapped the blade in saran wrap but the next one I didn't (its not in there long enough while shaping to need the wrap). Good luck, post pics.
