I decided to be thrifty and try my hand at leatherwork. I went to the local Tandy Leather store here in town and spent about $55 dollars on a chunk of leather, some needles, thread, and a few tools. The chunk of leather was big enough to make 4 FBM sheaths and since I don't have 4 FBMs, I made a sheath for my SFNO and now am looking for something else to make pants for (I know, I know, I'm like a kid with a new toy...
).
This was my first time ever working with leather, and I think the results were pretty good. Each one took me about 3 or 4 evenings to do. If any of you are considering trying to make your own sheaths, by all means, give it a shot. It's really not that hard and it is immensely rewarding.
This leather was 8 or 9oz and was already dyed a nice tan color. In the intrests of full discloser, the backs don't look nearly as neat...
