Sewing machine needle

I noticed that a lot of ya carry needles and thread in your kits. Well going through my wifes sewing stuff I found some extra needles for her machine. They are very heavy duty and the eye is at the bottom instead of the top. You could use the needle like a small awl when repairing any gear. The only problem I see, is that the hole or eye is small, and might be a problem for heavy duty nylon thread.

They make them with bigger eyes. It's another small tool that could be useful.

Another tool for the tool box! Look for some lighter weight nylon thread, save the heavy-waxed thread for the leather sewing awl..

No regrets!

To add to this idea. Anyone packing a needle which may be used for sewing....

Go ahead and thread the needle, and pack it in your PSK pre-threaded.
Try threading a needle at night in the wilderness.

I think highly of Kevlar thread. Very strong.

Ok, now I need to get my hands on Kevlar thread!

Damn you Skunk!

Something else about this needle, it would be very easy to manufacture a handle that the needle would fit into and would be a fairly nice sewing awl very similar to the one on the recent sewing awl thread. I can see that it would be much easier to sew heavy material such as packs with this set up as opposed to a conventional needle, yet you would not have to carry anything more than you usually do except for the sewing machine needle. If you take an exacto knife & drill a small hole in the center of the collet that holds the blade, you can use it to hold a sewing machine needle (and it still holds the exacto blades ) - you can then cut down the handle for a smaller footprint in your PSK. I have one set up like this in my sewing kit - it works fine w/ heavy carpet/upholstery thread (or spiderwire).
