I was putting a new PSK together and had an idea about how to store some sewing needles. Maybe it's been done before, but I haven't seen it. I taped a few needles around the ink tube in a bic pen, and reassembled it. No more searching for the rouge needles in the kit!

My "new" survival kit is the result of trying to de-junk a closet. I found an old 35mm camera in a decent case. The camera doesn't get used any more so I liberated the case for use as a light PSK.

I started filling the kit with supplies already on hand. Here is what is in it so far.

It contains the following
-Disposable poncho
-Space Blanket
-Three 4" square gauze bandages
-Notebook
-Pen with duct-tape thread and sewing needles
-Six band-aids
-A handful of cotton balls (first aid or tinder)
-20' of 550 cord
-Triple antibiotic (Petroleum jelly with a kick)
-1 pair of surgical gloves
-folding knife
-Mini bic lighter
-Magnesium bar
-The small plastic bottle contains
--Ibuprofen between cotton balls
--A few Halls cough drops (sometimes you just need one)
--50' of fishing line wound around the outside (mainly for use as a high strength thread)
Not shown: a couple of granola bars that fit in the front pouch

Let me know if you have any suggestion for improvement.

I need to thank RescueRiley and the anonymous donor of the alice pack that I won as part of Octobers "Owning the Skills" challenge. As luck would have it, this kit fits perfectly in one of the external pockets of the pack.

Time to get outside and use the new gear!

Thanks again guys.

heavy duty trash bags and more duct tape - so you can build an insta-shelter!

cool needle/pen container!

the only thing really missing is some way to purify water - a metal cup/pot or some purification tabs

a little compass would be nice - unless you're like me and you never get turned around in the woods

i wish every day hiker would go out with at least this sort of kit - it really doesn't take much to make a difference. a bottle of water + cell phone just isn't a survival kit.

Thanks for the advice:thumbup::thumbup:. I was thinking of picking up an aluminum bottle for water. I generally carry water in 20 oz soda bottles, but the aluminum could be used to boil water in a pinch. (I keep a metal cup in my day pack, but I want a kit that I always carry even on short walks where "nothing bad could happen:rolleyes:")

I generally keep a lensatic compass on me, but there is no reason not to have a button type compass in the kit. I also realized that I need a whistle.
