Sometimes the mother of invention is having a random collection of parts laying around in the same area.
A while ago I picked up a cheap computer bag from the local thrift shop. The bag was crap, but the strap was serviceable, so I held onto it for a while. Then I got the idea to attach it to my sheath of my Special Forces Shovel with a quick link. Then I made a loop on the other end with some paracord and a spring loaded cord stop bead. The end result is a carrying strap that can be worn over the shoulder and across the chest like a messenger bag for easy shovel transportation, when a pack isn't in use.
