Well this one was previewed on another thread with some excellent pictures, but I recently took delivery of it and turned around some more images today(so there :p )!

My fondness for Rodrigos work has already been stated in other threads, and as I expected I was not dissappointed by this latest offering.

It is a substantial piece, plenty of heft, well balanced and wonderfully executed. Classic design through and through, frame handle, elegant and simple C guard finished off with a delicate clamshell, and a really sweet two stage swedge.

Some Specs:

Blade Length: 11in
OAL: 16 1/2 in
Blade Steel: 52100
Spacers: Stainless Steel, coin edge file work.
Pins: Stainless
Guard and Frame: Construction Steel , 'blued' with manganese phosphate to give an understated but tough finish.
Handle material: Giraffe Bone.
Sheath: Brown leather, shark skin inlay and matching Frog Button.

This is my first piece with Giraffe Bone, it has its detractors and can look, well pretty naff, but the pieces on here are, to my eyes, stunning and a match for some mammoth ivories I have seen! Deep, rich, highly figured, and by all accounts very stable.

A touch I also like is the way the two tones in the sheath complement the tones in the handle construction, it really does look the business both sheathed and unsheathed.

Rodrigos work just gets better and better and this piece is clean, I mean medically sterile clean ......... and he hasn't even got his JS stamp yet, though he has passed the tests and will present his JS knives at Blade this year. Thanks again Rodrigo, can't wait to get hold of my first Sfreddo MS knife in a few years time!:D

I love everything about that knife, except the giraffe bone. For some reason, I just cannot get myself to like giraffe bone. The style of that knife is very Tim Hancock-ish(which is a very good thing).

I'll bet you're happy that knife. It looks fantastic! I've done some giraffe handles as of late and have become a real fan of it myself.

Congrats on that awesome looking Bowie,I too,am a fan of Rodrigo's.
His subtle touches are so bold, love that clamshell on guard.
Where is the balance point?

Terrific bowie Stephen. I'm going to have to race you to Rodrigo's table at Blade. You are going, aren't you?

Roger

Stephen,

First of all great catch!

Second be sure and stay home in the middle of June, so Roger and I have a chance to pick up some steel in Atlanta.

Best,

P

Marcel - I will put it in the case along with a few others! :D See you Sunday!

Doug - Balances around 1/8th in font of the ricasso, as it is a naroow ricasso its just about right for this knife.

Thanks for the comments fellas!

Stephen

I think that's just a fantastic knife A-Z Stephen! I agree that that is a well done giraffe bone, the package just looks great. You have a terrific variety of great knives, this just adds to the quality of that terrific variety!

One of my favorites, for sure. Great Pics too.

I only have one Sfreddo right now. Need to remedy that situation soon...

Nice catch Stephen! That´s a keeper for sure.

One thing I would like to understand deeply is why girafe bone isn´t in the taste of many forum mates. I might start a thread on the subject and see what comes up.

I think it might be because the giraffe is about the goofiest looking animal on the planet. So if you're gonna use bone, use the bone from something mighty, ferocious, or majestic.

Ever seen a walrus on a beach? ;)

I think giraffes are very graceful, FWIW

Ever seen a giraffe with tusks?

The image of that charcter from Woody Woodpecker cartoon keeps flashing in my mind... :D :D :D

Sorry Derrik.. couldn´t resist it ;)

I believe that compared to other sources of bone (non-fossil), giraffe bone is "very" dense & durable, making it a good choice. I think this one is very well done, it's the result that matters and the result is awesome especially with the coin edge framing etc, that is a well done piece!
