I've mentioned that I picked this up over in general, but now that I've carried it five days straight I figured I would do a review.
I've always loved the Bad Monkey, but never bought one, for a few reasons. I didn't want such a long blade, its just not my thing, and I already have a CS Recon 1 (4") and ZT 0561 (3.75" I believe), and the Kizer Ki423 (3.6"). I love carbon fibre, but am not a fan of the Emerson wave, and as far as I know you can't get one without the other. Lastly, I had a tough time justifying a $250 knife with 14C28N. Not that its a bad steel, but I expected something a little better. When the Spider Monkey was announced, It checked all my boxes.
Upon opening the package, I was very impressed. I love the sculpting of the CF scales. Grippy in the rear, which fades to smooth at the pivot. The weave is the most beautiful and unique design I've seen. I was disappointed upon opening it. It was stiffer than a sixteen year old at a jiggle joint.
I figured ok, well I'll just loosen the pivot slightly. Well that resulted in the blade going off center. Not rubbing the frame, but just enough to annoy Captain OCD. Whitty at Usamadeblade.com posted that it starts out tight but loosens up very quickly. I'd already missed the bus at this point, but returned the pivot to how it came, though it is still slightly off center. Luckily, a member here was kind enough to send me their extra set of proprietary tools.
As Whitty said, after playing with it for a few days it is now very smooth. I normally don't like thumbstuds, but this one is very well executed, and unobtrusive. At this point, I love everything about this knife, except for one small niggle. The pocket clip.
The angle of which the end of the clip is turned up digs into the palm of my large hands. Eyeballing it with what is left of my vision it appears the screws of of the same spacing and fitment of those Spyderco uses, so I may opt for a Spydie clip or putting the clip in a vise and reducing the angle.
It is a beautiful yet functional knife. Carbon fiber, titanium, and CPM-S35VN--What's not to like? If you are on the fence about it, GET IT.
