Ok I want to stress first and foremost that this is an attempt only and the first one I've made on any Kershaw to convert it to a frame lock. It may or may not pan out but I've had three people ask me about this and one other about a Cyclone I think it was and whether it was possible. Now that I'm caught up on what came in lately and between what I had and what is due to arrive next week I figured now is as good a time as any to start this and see if this can be done. Well, correction, as caught up as I can be. I still have the Ultimate Hunter rebuild outstanding but I'm still waiting on special drill sizes to complete that one.

I'll say up front I know if this conversion of the Blur can be done I won't be able to set the pivot barrel in like the factory did with that octagon shaped recess to keep it from letting the screw loosen. This concerns for two reasons. One, it may let the screw back out a little causing blade play of course and two if it is set with loctite it may become hard or very difficult to get back into. While both issues are concerns of mine it is not enough to keep me from giving it a try and carrying it for a time to see how it goes. I'm also not sure I'll be able to keep the assisted opening mechanism but we'll know soon I guess.

Here is the only pic I have of my knife currently on file. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=75111&d=1184033520

Stay tuned. If I have my way I'll be working on this one tomorrow.

Ok well, I made it this far this morning and now its break time.

I need a bike ride so I'll pick up on it later.

So far so good though. I'll need to mill out the long cut when I get back and then I'll be able to assemble and test fire it to see how it sits.

Well, I did go ahead and do the lock cut before leaving. It will look something like this once I finish it out. Keep in mind that its very rough at this stage yet. But I think you can get the general idea.

Now I need to very delicately shape it and get it to match up to the other side scale without dinging that brown color. If I can do that I'll be very happy. :D

Looks like I pulled this off and managed to do it with no permanent changes to the folder. We'll see how well the pivot behaves once I start using it. The pocket clip effectively gives the lock some support to keep from hyperextending it and it should be roughly the same feel in the hand thickness wise. I may even have managed to do this with the ability to use the assisted opening. I'll know later.

Also, it looks like its increased in weight a bit, from the original 3.8 ounces to 4.2 ounces as seen. I still have some refining to do before its done though so I expect it to be 4.1 or less when done.

Ok this turned out pretty well actually and as I like too. Meaning no permanent modifications were actually done to any part of the knife. Everything is still original and the liner lock and original handle can all go on it again at anytime.

I used .140 thick titanium which although slightly less thickness than the original scale is so close that you can't really tell with the naked eye either in the hand or in these pictures. I have not tried the assisted opening spring in it. Honestly I took the spring out some time ago anyway long before I decided to try this and have found that I actually prefer the knife without it but I will see how it works just to know.

I'm also contemplating anodizing the new lock a dark bronze color just to see if it matches up better but I may also just bead blast the opposite side instead. I'll sleep on it and decide. I can't get this chocolate color I know that. The only consolation is that the bead blasted finish matches up to the blade quite well. But what do you guys think of the brown and bead blast together? Yes or no?

Final weight is 4.1 ounces by the way. Anyway, let me know what you think.

Thanks for looking.

I just tested it with the torsion spring back in it and it works fine.

I may remake the non lock side tomorrow out of the same titanium and just bead blast that rather than modify the handles though. My thoughts are I'd really like to keep it as original as posssible while still being able to beef up the lock for my using and this way the original handle will remain relatively new in the box while I beat up the rest of it. :D

Looks good STR !! I think bead blasting the titanium and making a non lock side to match will look sharp, But either way is nice, You can always anodize the whole thing in a nice color.

Thanks guys. I did anodize the lock side dark bronze/brown color to see how it would look and you know what? Its not half bad really. I can certainly live with it. I'm glad too because I like the rubber insert grips Kershaw uses now that they have moved to this new softer textured one.

I took the torsion spring out of it again and did away with that factory thumb stud though. I had finally had all I could take of that thumb stripper so it had to go. No offense to Kershaw but I did the same thing to my Storm II because of the same stud. Its just not my favorite stud on a folder.

Very nice work, especially considering the tolerances required for a tight lockup.

Nice! Like you I appreciate a good framelock! They seem much safer to me, and look at the lockup on this guy!

Today I cut out an additional Chris Reeve style lock relief to double it and then reanodized it and took these. Look at the color match! Even surprised me how well it turned out. I am so glad this one is mine! :D

The only minor drawback to the stock Blur is that the lock liner could be a little thicker.
Blur framelock. Great idea.

Even though I wans never a big fan of the Blur, I must say.. That is one nice looking folder. Looks much stronger than the original too.

Bumpworthy!

Geez I can't believe I missed this one! To me this is one of the best STR mods ever! (I also like the simple lines and ergos of the Blur)

Yeah I don't know how it was missed either. I listed that knife for sale like three times both here and in the for sale forum and it finally sold on the last listing. It was a very nice example of the true bare bones get after it user I pride myself on building. James Todd bought that and I understand that an employee now has it and absolutely loved it. I can see why as I sold that one with great hesitation but hey, its not like I can't do it again you know? As the old saying goes you can't carry them all and you can't take em with ya when ya leave either. ;)

Whoah. That's all I have to say... You just took a knife I was seriously contemplating getting and corrected just about everything I don't like about it!
