Anyone have one of these? What is your opinion of them? This is a repeat of a question asked in an old thread back in 2001, and evidently there was little response either becaue of no interest in them, or little forum participation.

I have a 1ELK, which is an SG8 RMEF Zumbo edition, and a SG8DU Ducks Unlimited edition, but not an SG7 yet. The 8 is a drop point lockback and the 7 is a clip point lockback, both with decorative triple fullers and partial serrations on Schrade+ blades, Thermo Plastic Rubber handles, though stiffer material than the TPR Safe-T-Grip series, and stainless liners that folks lament were missing from the XT7B linerlock. What do you think of them, besides the fact that they are large and heavy?

PS- I've also seen Quail Unlimited and Ruger editions.

I have the Turkey Federation version of the SG7, it has a bronze plate with 3 gobblers on the left side of the handle. It's a substantial knife, but I would like it better without the serrations. I need to find the belt sheath for mine too.

I see the sheaths on ebay all the time. $3-5. Some SG's were made without serrations, according to the 2001 post. Keep your eyes open, maybe you'll find one.

It's a substantial knife. A real handful. And for what they sell for now on ebay, a real bargain. Not my style, but for someone that has $10 and needs a good knife, it will do nicely.

I do own one. As some of you know, I am filling an old display case with Blade-etched OTs, UHs, some of the later composition handled knives. Just for fun. My SG has the National Wild Turkey Federation etch, shield, box and sheath.

Note on the display.. My favorite etches are those that declare: "Compliments of Schrade Cutlery" with the year. I have a 12OT, a 34OT and a 194OT with those blade etches. Given to who? Good customers or great employees? The 8OT shown has the 'Keen Kutter KOT' etch. To make it harder, I am seeking those knives with only standard stock handles (sawcut, Staglon, composition). Here's a pic of the insert removed from the case.

Sorry to highjack the thread!

Phil, not a hijack at all. Besides, since when do we worry about that here? I see there are still a few more missing, but can't read the board. Which ones?

I don't know what year the Sg7 and SG8 were introduced. '99 is as early as I see the SG7, and the 8Elk is the only entry I see for the SG8 in the catalog (2000-2004), but I see SG8's on the market with the SG8 stamp, so they were made. There was some blade grind changing going on, but I haven't pinned it down yet. There were changes in the depth of the serrations, and how the serrations were finished at the choil, also on the shape of the spine. See the top grind in the pic? My DU does not have that swedge. Also, the DU does not have a blade etch or special stamp, only the twin brass handle plates like the 8ELK. And the serrated blades, 7 & 8, seem to have used the "S" extension in the catalogs to designate them as serrated blades.

The SG7's were 1st published in 1993 and featured on the 1994 cover of the shortline catalog.
There are 3 models. SG7,SG7S and SG7W
The SG7S is serrated and the SG7W has a wooden inlay in the handle.

Personal opinion the handle is uncomfortable and a bit large.

Huh. I didn't think the SG7 was that old. Makes it all the more interesting for me to know the dates. Thanks!

As per my display case with etched blades, am missing a few. The UHs are tough. Only have a etched 12UH (friends of the NRA). The other UHs in the display are just plain, so I need the 807, 834, 885, 897. And I do not even know if these were made with etched blades. But as we have learned here, anything is possible with these. The 77OT was easy... they come etched "Improved Muskrat". Need these OTs: 89. 104, 108, 18, 33, 3, LB5 and LB7. Anyway, none of these are expensive, gives me something to look for and have fun with.

I have an etched 897, and we might work a trade of some sort. Got a Schrade Busch? E-mail me.

PS- Still playing with the SG8's. The "fullering" is more than decorative it seems. It is the only way to grip the blade for opening since it lasks a thumbstud and is too big for a nail nick. But it isn't real functional in allowing a one handed opening, still requiring a thumb and forefinger pinch.
