hey guys, ive been blacksmithing and blademaking for three years. lately ive been gettin into my scottish heritage and me and my buddy been workin on some sgian dubhs. does anybody know what them knotches or file marks on the back of the blade mean or if they mean anything at all???

Well first of welcome to the forums!

Concerning the file work, it depends on the knife, on the more utilitaran versions it was just ment to add traction if you had to stab someone (because theres no choil to keep your hand from slipping onto the edge)

on some of the more elaborate versions, it would add to the over all intricacy of the design and I would think the more intricate the knife the more it could be seen as a status symbol....

If you want to try your hand at file work there's some excellent tutorials on the web......also here's some good examples..

I really love the rope pattern myself.....

I hope it helps!!!!
