SGPS and the Sharpmaker

As most of the civilized world knows, I got a Fallkniven U2 and love it.

It was SHARP out of the box ......but..... it had a ...s l i g h t.....burr.

So I decided to take it off. HAH! SGPS is hard! Putting it to the white stick of the sharpmaker felt like rubbing a regular steel on a windowpane.

But I got it off. However, it was not as sharp as it was as I think I probly changed the angle a bit, so I set out to re-do the edge on the Sharpmaker from scratch.

Works GREAT. However, it took 100 (count em) 100 strokes on the 30 degree "back angle" and 100 (count em) 100 strokes on the 40 "edge" angle.

It is now even SHARPER than new and no burr.

The last 20-30 on each angle were on the flat of the stick.

One tough blade. It even "feels" different when cutting stuff like teensy paper slivers with a whisk of the wrist. As polished as the edge feels to the finger, it seems to have a slight micro "saw" effect. Which actually makes it cut faster than .....say....the scary sharp of a new Spydie.

Which I .....ALSO.....like immensely. Think I'll try welding the U2 blade on the end of a Spyderedge and see how that works.

:D

Even without going to the 40 degree setting, it's a good thing.

Mine also had a slight burr. I just did 100 on the brown corners, 40 on the remaining three steps and it was again grooviliscious. If it ever dulls again (unlikely as I usually use Spydies and Swamprats), I'll follow your lead and use the 40 degree setting, but I'll also treat that edge to the ultra-fine hones.

Please forgive me for disagreeing that the U2 is tough. I believe the opposite to be true. Frickin' laser beam, yes; tough, no.

Thanks for sharing your results.

G'day,
My U2 was marvellous out of the box but I couldn't resist trying to make it better. As the blade was basically a convex grind, I put a convex edge on it with a leather strop, some 1200 grit wet and dry and polished it with the leather and some polishing paste. Now it's even better than marvellous.

Since when?

What´s about you 921, your 806D2...?

Are they staying home alone? :(

thombrogan, I may have been unclear.

When I said "strong" I was referring to the edge. I imagine it is brittle from being so hard, but the edge seems like it will hold a strong edge against cutting wear.
