I traded Todd at Shadetree Phenolics for some handle material - here's what I'm sending him.
The red/blk is felt, and is extremely grippy. At first I wanted the red to pop out more, but after etching the blade, I like it better the way it is. The patterns he can work with this material are endless, and I really like the zigzag-lightning pattern in parts of it. I requested some orange/blk for a kitchen knife, which I think will be perfect for that use.
The blue one is the glow material. Like the felt, it's also very grippy - but it lights up like Christmas after a little sunlight hits it...very cool stuff. I wish I could post a photo of it - I could read the hands of my watch by the initial glow.
The materials are softer than micarta, so neither will get glossy. But, you can wet sand them both pretty well, and they are grippier than micarta - I didn't test for things like chemical resistance, etc. I like the way these turned out, and Todd is great to work with. I definitely recommend him if you need something special and different.
