Thinking about getting another Shadley and thought I'd see what people think about these two: The first is remington bone and the second is brown jig bone. The first is about $600 more.

Gene makes a beautiful knife..his stockman is one of my favorites scaled down to an easily pocketable size..its a crisp a knife as you'll see
Remmigton Bone is Rare for Gene there isnt much quality stuff left it is a premium material for slipjoints..The other looks like Utica Bone also a vintage bone but isnt as 'precious' less cognac and caramels coming through...it may also be Genes jigged bone
ask the seller for serial numbers and call Gene he'll tell you exactly what on there

Either way you are in for a treat

Actually, add this one to the mix also. I've always collected for myself and not for a knife's "value" as a collectible. However, since I have already found most of my favorite knives, I am starting to look at new one's from a collector's standpoint. What are your thoughts on a Shadley 3 blade stockman (like the ones above) v. a Shadley 4 blade congress (like this one below). Thanks.

I prefer the shape and the blade selection on the Stockman. That Remington Bone looks amazingly like stag. It is the best imitation that I have seen.

another difference: the first knife seems to be a split back (both springs on the pen blade), the second doesn't.

i think i'd go for the first one, but i have to admit that i am a little biased. i bought a five blade stockman from g. l., about the same age, remington bone scales. love the knife, and g. l. is a pleasure to deal with!

maybe you should ask in the "traditional folders and fixed blades" forum, a sub forum of "general knife discussion".

best regards,
hans

i second keith's opinion: a sheepfoot next to a wharncliffe blade, hmmm, don't know... maybe it's a traditional blade selection, however... but the experts are in "traditional folders".

Neither are split backs..that would have the primary blade riding on the backsprings of the two secondary blades separated by a tapered spacer.
The clip point on the stock man rides on its own spring and the two secondary blades share the other spring(front/back)
FWIW I'm sure Gene has made many more 3 blade Stockmans that 4 blade congress..but again Remmington bone is rare on a Shadley and is a premium material.

I don't think either are splitbacks either because of the blade configuration. Both are supposedly "mint" so I am wondering if the increased price is due to remington bone.

darn, you can't hide from these experts, can you! :o

thanks for the correction, riad!

I'm Assuming Both are from purveyors..Price could be reflecant on the Price they paid plus mark up..age fthe knife could be a factor as well
what are the serial numbers..Gene marks all his knives with a number.
