Ive got one and think it's a great small fixed blade. The only thing Id change about it is the sheath, I don't care for the pancake type. I use a Buck sheath for mine and it works great. And Id like to have the option of an adapter I could attach in between the main knife and the butt cap to add an extra inch to the handle, sometimes it seems just a little too short.

I cant complain too much, I got mine brand new from a knife show for $140

I really like the knife and it is my main camp knife. Cant get much in the handle though...I just put in a card with my personal info into it for the slim chance that if I ever lose it the finder has to live with the moral dilemma of knowing who it belongs to, and the right thing to do is to call me.

You are not the first to say this and are not alone.

ditto on the above!!!!.....an adapter/spacer as an option to lengthen the handle about an inch would be a great thing...how about it anne and chris?...any chance for this to become a reality?....thanks...feverdoc@yahoo.com

I have a Mountaineer and I agree the handle is about 3/4" too short. Had an older Aviator and like an idiot I sold it. Really wish I'd kept it.

I keep a Marbles compass, a couple of large strike anywhere matches, a couple of tinder tabs from the spark lite. I also have some of the small glass vials that hold the potable aqua tablet that fit in the handle as well. I can adjust the "load" to suit the trip.

Pain medications, stimulants, etc may be appropriate for a military mission. There are any number of things that can be packed depending on the weather and terrain.

FWIW

Hoah! (Its an Army thing!)

I have a Shadow III and really like it. Order it directly from Chris Reeve and you can special order a snap sheath rather than the pancake sheath. I did the special order sheath and it is beautiful.

I own 2 of them and must say those are just great

Actually I've got the standard model first, then the Mountainer I. Then I've decided that I liked single guard/notched spine better (like on mountainer) and got Shadow III like that from Dennis Wright

Worked out very well

IMHO very versatile, small fixed blade. Tough and simple. And holds the edge really good.
here's the pic of both models

Call Chris up and order a snap sheath anyway. It is well worth the money and so much more convenient.
BTW, the Shadow III is a sweet little knife for daily carry and general use.

The Shadow III is perhaps the best mini-survival knives ever made. The design is functional and incredibly strong. I am currently doing evaluations of small survival knives for a knife publication. Initial results place the Shadow III at the top of the list. So far it has been driven through a fire door repeatedly, in order to make a hole large enough to reach through, without damage to the edge. In fact I was able to slice ripe tomatoes (a useful measure of sharpness) afterwards without resharpning. The small handle is, for most people, a matter of instruction and adjustment. There were six students in the class that evaluated this knife and all were able to adjust to a short handle after some direction and a bit of practice. Put a firstarter and a roll of hundred dollar bills in the handle and you are set for wilderness, 3rd world or urban survival. I have a friedn who is a fulltime survival instructer and law enforcment and SAR tracker. He wears one daily as a neck knife. In the handle he has a firestarter of his own design which screws into the cap. It's a great knife in all of it's variations.
Best Regards,
Morgan

Sorry to have to say that a spacer or any modification like that is unlikely to be offered. The 4 inch knives are intended to be compact and the blade and handle in proportion to one another. A bigger handle necessitates a bigger blade.

Razor, you'll like the spearpoint design. As to the sheath, I've got the pancake someplace. Dennis sold me a sheath for the Aviator and a Concealex. The latter works real good in the inverted position on my insulated bids in the winter.

I find S.III to be not only great wood/camping knife but also it is very comfy to carry it in the city. I like to carry it horizontal reversed (look at pics) because it is not only easier to pull out the knife but also in cold weather A2 handle doesn't stick to body (brrr...).

It's really nice to carry a powerfull knife and be able to use it really hard yet small enough to carry it in insuspicious way, like a shadow, right? :p

And, well, the handle can be half an inch longer but I am lucky to have small hands :) and you have to used to it, really this is no problem at all.And I love gfeller black leathers! Sorry, had to tell you that...

are these are legal to carry in california?

Ca. state law allows fix-blade visable ( not concealed) carry up to 4" blade, however local county especially in urban areas maybe they are more restrictive. Camping & hiking carry should be OK but check your area laws-

I don't have any problems with the Shadow III's handle; my gripe has to do with its narrow (from spine to edge) blade. It'd be perfect, for me anyway, if the Shadow III had more belly.

I too have a ShadowIII and really like it. Unlike some others I find the pancake sheath the bees knees for comfort and staying put. I also like how high it rides. Makes me feel more comfortable using it in high oops areas. The handle is smaller, but not a prob for my hands. All I've found that is usefull and will fit in handle so far is the little tuff cloth they gave me and a small arkansas stone. But will now go look at snap sheath cause I can't help myself.

I have a new ShadowIII, and when I tell people the knife is made of one piece of
steel they have to take a close look to believe me, , anyone know what angle
these blades have been shapened at??

picked one up for $199 shipped ups 2-day air.

love it. pancake holder fits perfect above my back left hand pocket.

The Shadow III was my first CRK to own since 2000, and though I got some more meanwhile, it's still my favourite. In general I have the handle empty, but an arclite AAA fits in perfectly, or a selfmade fire starter (magnesia stick plus a piece of chainsaw-file.
With the small sebenza the shadow III imho makes a perfect all around combi.
