Shadow IV Question

I'd like to ask you knowledgable knife folk a couple of questions about the Chris Reeve Shadow IV knife.

1) Do you get a lot of stripped threads in the aluminum cap? In the dark or under stress you might screw it in cocked and strip the threads. Does this happen?

2) Is the spear point profile of the Shadow IV particularly good at skinning game? I have a skinning knife but I wonder about this.

3) How durable is the Kalgard finish?

4) Would you buy this or a Busse #5?

Thanks in advance.

In over 15 years of making these one piece knives, we have never heard of anyone stripping the threads of the butt cap! There are more than adequate chamfers on both the cap and the handle to prevent any cross threading.

The Shadow IV is not really designed for skinning - we have the Ubejane (or Skinner) that has a far more appropriate blade shape. You can check it out at www.chrisreeve.com

The Kalgard coating is pretty durable. The knife is sandblasted, then the Kalgard is sprayed on. It has a low surface tension and the liquid keys into all the tiny hollows that are created by the sand blasting. The knife is then baked to allow the Kalgard to cure. The Kalgard will mark if it is scratched with a hard object (e.g. rock or metal) and it will wear on the high spots with continual movement of the knife in and out of the sheath. This is one of the reasons why we offer the refurbishing facility - if the knife gets to where you want to put it back to "new", you can send it to us, we will sand blast off the old coating and recoat it, sharpen it and it looks great!

Hope this helps.

I have had a Mountaineer I refinished by CR and I can testify that it looks like the day I bought it. I think I bought it in 1988 and the coating really held up well. the same goes for the butt cap.

I am wondering how the Shadow IV feels in your hands and how it performs the tasks you require of it.
I had a friend who did not like the fixed blades as he said the narrowing of the handle made it to thin to grip properly and it felt clumsy. Any comments on this?
I would like to someday get a Shadow IV or maybe the Project I, although I am leaning more towards the Shadow.

Simple answer. It's as near perfect as you will get for an all round knife.
Get one. You will not regret it :)

You might take a look at a Mountaineer II. Same blade length, same overal lenght, NO top guard, so one can use different gripping positions. A very
nice allround knife.

Great knife I bought my buddy one to take on his 2nd tour of Iraq

Why resurrect a 7 year old thread? The original thread starters last post was in 2001.

7 year old thread just answered: "Get one. You will not regret it"

Now that is WAY COOL :D

BTW, the answer is perfectly ok, one can't go wrong with Shadow IV IMHO

I have a shadow III and it is just about the only round handled knive that I can say I like. I have a Tanto 1 but for some reason it just does not feel as comfortable as the Shadow III, and I just LOVE that pancake sheath it comes with.

I know you are asking about the shadow IV and it would be my guess that it is just as comfortable and my Shadow III.

You can't go wrong with CRK's and the Shadow line is always a good buy!

Buy It and enjoy!

Wow. Now THAT'S a blast from the past. How does one even find a 7 yr old thread. Most Scotch isn't even aged that well. :p

SuperD;
How about some Johny Walker Blue Label.....25yrs old and only $200 for a fifth. And I thought that J W Black was the best. Now they have red, black, green, and blue!

Nice but in the UK we have older beer! :D

I'll swap an old Johnny Walker for a good Knob Creek or Bakers anyday.

Scotch has some history,...Bourbon has the taste!
