I recently received a Shadow IV from the for sale forums. It's clearly a great knife but I just can't get comfortable with the double guard. I'll give it more time. Has anyone felt this way and then warmed up to it eventually?

Also, I've read about a single guard version but it doesn't seem to be available. Any info would be appreciated.

Perhaps I should just go for the Mountaineer, but I love the idea of a having spear point.

I have both and here's my opinion::D

I, like you, like the single guard. I like that you can "feel" which way the knife is in your hand without having to slide your thumb forward (potentially onto the edge) to check.

However, the sheaths are the real issue from my point of view...

The Mountaineer has an open-top design with nothing to lock the knife in. It does fit snugly - at least when it's new it does. It isn't ambidexterous, either. It doesn't SEEM like it would matter, but I would wear a knife right hand, but if I had a pistol on, I'd wear the knife left hand.

As you know, the Shadow IV has a sheath with a strap and is totally reversible.

I have both as well, also my last resort knife in the wilderness is an black coat Shadow IV. I would not venture out without it...ever, just love it. A real life saver:thumbup:

I have the single guard Shadow IV and it's awesome. I have taken advantage of the design using it for many tasks I wouldn't be able to accomplish if it had a double guard.
I never did care much for the double guard on the smaller blades anyway.

I've had a Shadow IV, since about 1990, it has the dbl. guard and has been used for any thing you would use a knife for and a few things you wouldn't and has always done well for me.

I have handled the single guard versions of the Shadow IV and like it, but for me when I go single guard it will be a Sable, dang thing grows on me more and more.

I appreciate your comments, thanks everyone. I purchased a Bark River Sperati to try a different perspective on the spear point design. The Sperati is a very nice knife but it feels like a stage prop compared to the Shadow IV. I'll give both some more time...

I have the single guard version with a right hand carry pouch style sheath , no keeper strap. Definitely "feels" better than the double guard for me at least and I have no quams about not having a snap closure on the sheath.
