Shagbark Hickory syrup

I just read of this and I have dozen or so Hickorys near me. Not made from the sap as traditional syrups are, but from boiling the bark. A internet search will bring up more info if your interested. One way to find out, Ill gather some today.
 
Hmmmm. Thats interesting. I look forward to your findings. Weve got shagbark everywhere......

I used the toast , then boil method. Not much success. I got a nice amber color liquid after I boiled the bark but I never could get it to thicken up. Maybe it doesnt ? It is edible but basically tastes like simple syrup and not much hickory taste to my batch. Does make the house smell good though when I toasted it.
