Shaman nub delete - any regrets ?

I like a lot about the shaman but the nub really bugs me - it gets in the way of the compression lock and I can’t forget with them like I do my Paras.

I have a CF S90v and jade/M4 dlc that I am debating the nub deletes. The DLC one I am pondering hard. So has anyone done the delete and regretted it ?

Hi Gorky,

Welcome to our forum. Thanx for visitin'

I've designed many knives across the years. I spent a couple of years refining the Shaman pattern. I actually have two other models based on the same pattern. My philosophy is "No more than necessary, and no less than perfect". I would request that you learn to use the knife, with the "nub". I doesn't take too long to become adjusted to the guard. Then we'll talk again.

Hi Sal !

Using the knife isn’t the problem - I love the contoured handles and thick blade stock. That said, I tend not to use the front choil (on this or any of my paras), making the nub a bit less critical from that aspect of use. However, I am contending with a few other things, some of which are more important than others:

1) one of my favourite fidgit tasks on my paras is to hold down the comp lock and flick the blade incessantly. Drives my wife crazy. Makes my day.
2) I have years of muscle memory with the Paras to keep my finger in the comp lock hole when closing the blade.
3) on my CF Shaman, I have actually dropped the knife (and almost dropped it a few times) when aggressively closing the knife and having the nub push my finger enough that I lose my grip on the slicker CF (G10 versions not a problem)
4) while I love my CF Shaman, I still rotate it amongst about two dozen Spydercos, many with comp locks, so my idiot brain has trouble remembering to move my idiot finger quickly enough when closing the Shaman

I wouldn't do it. I learned how to move my finger quickly thanks to my Amalgam. The Shaman nub is nothing compared to that flipper, and it's a functional part of the design.

In the end they are your knives, however, so grind them off if that makes you happy.

eek! that it's not a PM2 is not really a good reason to mod it. imo.

Not many times you get to speak directly w/the actual designer of a knife. Kudos to Sal for being "available" to us in this way.

As for the "nub," it doesn't bother me and I see it as an essential part of the design of the knife. "Deleting" it would IMO ruin the design and feel of the knife, since it is essential to creating the choil as well as the 2nd finger grip.

Without the nub, there would be no separation between the choil and the 2nd finger grip which would be very "odd" IMO, apart from the fact that there would very little material between the pivot the edge of the blade/scale after the nub would be removed.

So, personally, I say DON'T DO IT!!!

There's a reason why the knife was designed the way it is and some things are better left alone.
