I have an idea to use the oxi clean method to darken the scales, and using nail polish to mask areas i want to keep lighter than others.... thinking of trying to create a faux damascus look, like beskar.... Wondering if its possible.

You may have better luck using something like a decal cutout instead of nail polish. Nail polish is quite difficult to get clean, fine lines with that are consistent. But yes, that will work.
