Yesterday I scored a few nice things at an auction. First of all, I got 10 really sweet, top-o-the-line floor mats for $50. These floor mats are various sizes, but they all are that really nice kind that has the thick layer of solid rubber on top and foam rubber underneath. These mats are like $90 for just a 3x5 size, and most are bigger. One is 4'x8' !!!

Also, the gem in the collection is the Starrett crystal pink 18"x18"x4" Grade B toolroom surface plate I got for $20. Perfect condition. The guy said it was never used once, just sat on the bench for the last 4 years.

SCORE! WOOHOO! Take that, suckers!

This was a sealed bid. I also bid $500 apiece on a Clausing Colchester Lathe and a Bridgeport Series I but lost. Both in pretty ratty shape. I found out later that the guy I sometimes get machines from had won the bid, and one of his lackeys told me he bid $1500 for each. Good luck getting some profit from that, I say. Those machines needed a full rebuild to be any good. Precision bearings in those sizes cost a sheet-load of money!

This is a good reason why anyone buying used machinery for the first time should really take someone knowledgeable with them or they could get screwed. I know this guy. He'll probably try to get $3k each for those machines.
 
He must be pretty flush... :D Or he has someone lined up for em already. You did good. There aren't too many auctions around here, especially for machinery. Once in a while you see a beat up old anvil at a farm sale but they sell like gold for midtown ladies to put in their gardens. :rolleyes:

People freak me out at auctions; maybe it's just local dimwits but people will pay more for junk at an auction than they could buy it new for. Blows me away.
